im more curious about independent artists and how they feel about it

not really, 'how would you feel if your whole catalog showed up on soulseek' but one or two of your tunes you're selling/planning to sell on your site being readily available there

can p2p be useful to an artist

even if I found one of my older tunes that I gave out being hosted on a torrent site, I'd be bummed

I haven't released any tracks onto the p2p networks, but it is definately a valid form of promotion.

I guess the danger is that once people like your stuff, they'll reach for the p2p instead of the official web store.

I reckon one way around this is to release mixes for free, but individual tracks as pay only downloads. As an example of this, I've been listening to the Combat Recordings mixes pretty heavily over the last few days, and one tune in particular from the mixes I want to buy.

Swings and roundabouts really. I actually can't afford to go see Terminator Salvation at the cinema, so I either have to accept that I can't see it right now or watch a shitty cam job. You pay for the quality of the experience at the end of the day. Download the entire catalogue at 320kbit or buy one tune for a quid at 44.1K....

And to answer the original question, I would be gutted to see any of my releases on a p2p network (although I have yet to see that happen haha)

i thought this might be a great idea, if the tunes were ID'd by the DJ and not too easily ripped

also, maybe you could just rip a couple of your favorite songs from your album, include some notes in the comments about where to buy the rest of the album (if this was cool with your label) or paypal donation link

better than a whole rip from some mp3 group with just gr33tz to the kiddies

send the user home with some quality chocolate chip cookies but not the whole batch

Regarding promotional mixes, you have a pertinent point. DJ's must announce each track as they play, or mention a web address where the track listing can be found. In the track listing, there needs to be the exact times each tune drops so listeners can be certain of which tune is which.

I listen to too many mixes with killer tunes, but no way of ascertaining who wrote each individual piece!

I'd say no but I really don't like the voting options. It's not about not affording it but about people showing some fucken respect and making "unreleased" tunes actually mean something to select DJs.

p2p makes making music as a whole, pointless.. especially if you aim to profit from what you do, obviously its a beeotchcicle but theres nothin we can really do about it

2003 called, they want their thread back. I don't think anyone even uses p2p anymore. Yeah there is slsk but whatever is on there they usually get from the Torrents anyway.

I am usually pissed and pleased at the same time. Mixed emotions. Look at it this way if they aren't trying to share your music then your shite probably isn't very popular. Savory Audio's biggest seller so far was defo torrented. I haven't found any of the others yet. Go figure!

not really because the people who were going to pay for it always will for the most part and the people who pirate it really had no intention of buying it in the first place
now if it's an unreleased dub i only sent to a handful of people that's another story...

I'm more worried about someone discovering the 8,000 gut-wrenchingly shitty tracks I've written under other aliases over the years and posted on the net.

not enuf options in the poll, but 2b honest i'm not sure that this subject lends itself well to a poll. but anyway, a discussion has been provoked...

its not that it doesnt bother me slightly, cos I'm absolutely fucking skint and every little bit counts. but as pointed out above, if u aint on p2p then u probably aint very successful, so there's an element of flattery in it. and I also agree that anyone who really wants to buy your shit (and has the money to do so) will buy your shit.

basically its just a fact of life. and i DL stuf illegally so it wld b extremely hypocritical to get irate about others DLing mine. the world has changed: adapt.
