Re: David Gibson's "The Art of Mixing"
This one's on my TO-BUY list after having created the producing books thread. The one I've bought is Bob Katz' "Mastering audio" but it's a rather tough cookie really so you have to read it more than once and even then you probably won't understand most of it - at least not me

Re: EQ Key Freq
Bob Katz' book "Mastering audio" has such a diagramm, too (p47) but it's more general. Like, this certain area when raised gives a muddy sound while when you remove some it sounds this way etc. I don't think I may post a photo here as it's copyrighted but in case someone owns the book, hav...

Re: Pitch Bend Range in Albino 3
Click the Albino logo in the bottom right of the main screen to reach the "back" of the synth. There you can set the range. Note though, that pitch bend ranges are NOT saved with Albino patches, you have to set it everytime you restart Albino I think.

Re: First time djing at a bar.
Good selection is the key, as has been said, if no other DJs are present, nobody really notices or cares about smaller mistakes. Know your tunes, don't try crazy stuff (I do it all the time, usually goes wrong ) unless you practiced it and know you can nail it. Probably everyone gets nervou...

Re: Is this just an 808? (Macc where are you?)
A pitch envelope could do the deal, but I'm almost postive compression alone doesn't. There seems to be a different sound in the kick - and I don't think you can shape the existing frequencies to sound like that with compression alone. I'm really intrigued, please tell us if you ask Loefah and he te...

Re: Is this just an 808? (Macc where are you?)
I've given this a few minutes to recreate. While I couldn't do it, I'm almost 100% sure this is a layerd 808 tuned down a little more than 4 whatever (Kontakt, is it semi-notes? cent?) and a super-dry characterless kick on top. I tried EQing the 808 but it would sound distincly different than this v...

Well, the crashing is a known issue... with warzed versions of Massive. I bet it crashes as soon as you try to apply some modulation?

Book recommendations please
I'm going on vacation in 2 days and won't be accessing any computer capable of making music I guess but I'd like to use the time to do some reading. Can anyone recommend music books covering the whole production thing, be it music theory, mixing, mastering, some cool synthesizer book or anything lik...

Re: wtf massive!
This sounds much like an unchecked "Restart via gate" setting in the OSC tab. If it is off, the oscillators start at random phases. You can try it by triggering the same MIDI key quickly for a few times, the sound always should be different. Sometimes this is wanted but most of the time yo...

Re: Semi noob wanting to learn everything possible
Regarding the the bass: I usually start with a pure sine that peaks at about 50 Hz or something. Depending on your speakers and experience you can tell when the bass is deep enough as you want but frequency analyzers never hurt. This way you made sure the sub bass actually sits the below the kicks. ...

If this happens to me, I usually remove the whole thing and clean the 4 metal contacts and put it back on. Solved almost all the issues I ever had with needles, except when I fucked them up.

Re: compression: the release setting
Alright, thanks! Back to topic: The Kontakt compressor offers a minimum release of 50ms. I just checked, the average drum sample (be it snare or kick) is approx. 100ms in length. Now let's say I choose an attack of 10ms, this would technically leave a time window of mere 40ms for release. I misunder...

Re: Your Top 3 Intuitive Concepts to Making Music
1) Experiment 2) Talk to people who know better. A few years ago you had to do it in person, now there's the internet 3) Learn your sound theory stuff. Regarding 3): To me it seems like quite a few people lack basic understanding of what sound is, what synthesizers do, what those funny waveforms in ...

Re: compression: the release setting
I don't get the cult around compressors, they are not black magic now are they? Generally speaking, they tolerate any sound level for a certain time (the attack). After the attack phase is over, anything over a certain level (threshold) is reduced in volume by a certain factor (specified by the rati...

Re: Help with FM
FM synthesis is no black magic really. One signal determines the frequency of another signal. It's your imagination that gets you the results. Apart from that, look for books called something like "Synthesizer Programming", they most probably have sections of FM synthesis.
