i thinking panning is fine as long as your not panning your bass. panning bass will make the record skip.

high frequcey can cause a needle to jump, but i think it causes distortion more so than skipping as the hf isn't powerful enougth to make the needle jump out of the groove. so it starts jumping up and down within the groove causing hf distortion...but of course if the needle starts jumping up and do...

Get the most expensive Valve compressor you can afford... if you can't get good results with virtual tools then valve hardware is OBVIOUSLY the answer. actully most musicans make the same if not more from downloads than hard copies...from research ive done with-in the honest indie label scene.

itunes and that junk i dont know about id imagine they totally rip the artists off.
