If you're just after straight tones use SoundForge or Cooledit to generate tones at 50Hz or whatever... and use that as a starting point for processing and distorting and resampling. Or, fire up a bass patch in a VST instrument, and hit various low notes until you find the one(s) that really resonat...

And as for lower overheads for mp3 downloads, even big major label artists aren't making megabucks from selling mp3s, so a small label is going to make peanuts from it - the real money has and always will be from doing gigs. There was a thread recently about this on DOA, some guy said he worked for...

I've seen people chat about tuning drum sounds to get them in key - in particular the kick drum in relation to the sub.

How necessary is it and how do you go about it? By ear?
