Benga's Future Music Magazine Interview

Benga

I can't quite believe how generous you were with your studio/production secrets. Most producers who are interviewed in that magazine are pretty cagey when it comes to tips and tricks. You're a total dude. Thank you.

Didn't Wookie work out of Jazzie B's office which was why he could rework Fairplay and all those other tunes? Ewah, correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't his office "The Africa Centre"? i think it might have been in '88, but by 2000 or so, Wookie was in S2S's HQ in camden. that's where i saw...

i think people need to be careful not to confuse 'influential' with 'big', esp in terms of the order when they came out. tunes that came with a given idea first should be given the credit. for example 'blipstream' was big but 'request line' came before it, so i'd definitely nominate 'request line' ...

Where does Wookie fall within all this? That boy was rocking the wobble moog basslines back in 1998.

Dubstep Swing/Groove?

What swing setting are you guys using for your tracks? Do you have say a 45% swing on your 16th notes and a 45% on your (half time) 8th notes? Or are you keeping everything strictly quantised and using velocity to make things groove?

Is the chorus calm down a sample or not?

Not sure but this is one of the best 'vocal' dubstep tunes I've heard.

Interesting post Jason. Thank you.

Because Ableton Live 5's metering is so poor, what does -6dbfs mean in Ableton. If I used PSP Vintage Metering on the master track as a guide, what should my peak be hitting for a 24 bit WAV. -6db or more like -3db ?

Some of these "top" producers need to stop doing everything in Reason and invest in some analogue kit. Even a little Mackie analogue Desk would help. who are you talking about though? i hear some stuff which sounds thin, but i would say that most of the top producers have got a pretty ful...

(IMO) Toasty Boy pisses on everyone. The ideas in his tunes and the PRODUCTION is only matched by Search & Destroy. (IMO). I think there is an issue in dubstep with production values. There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of well produced tunes. Amazing ideas and vibes but a lot of the tunes so...

I've got ear plugs and its one of my best investments. The audiologist told me that over the last 3 years her business had tripled with people coming in for tests and getting moulds done for their custom ear plugs. She blames people playing their I-pods too loudly and people going to loud clubs with...
