Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
Hello all, popped my head in here for the first time in a while. Been on holiday, been EXTREMELY busy too... keep em peeled ;) Anyway hope y'all are well :) in its entirety, it’s peaking at just over half the db meter on ableton. It sounds really nice , however it is quiet, which is fine imo... Mix ...

People are scared of having small penises.

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
Hello all! I'm not dead - been working extremely hard. Some very good things happening here :) I'll have something very nice for you all quite soon too. Keep em peeled. The difference is that, while Audio is inside the DAW, clipping won't distort it because DAWs work at 32+ bits. So you can have you...

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
To clarify that in reference to nowaysj's post; The key point here is appropriate dynamic control on each element, not blindly limiting everything by 20dB or whatever. No need to go crazy dealing with it. To sort of put it another way, nowaysj's experience (' not too long ago, I'd have such a bitch ...

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
Hello all, sorry, been buried under work.... I did read Phace saying at an interview that he tries to never touch the master channel in terms of loudness/dynamics and work with limiters/compressor individually per track. I find this interesting because if that was the case he must not be leaving any...

Aye!nowaysj wrote: 4. You like the sound of old shitty reverb, not being facetious, I kind of like "bad" sounding fx.
I've got all this fancypants mastering gear in my studio but if there was a fire, I'd be saving my £15 PSE spring reverb.
It's absolutely awful

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
@macc - have you heard the recording of freddie hubbards " return of the prodigal son" from his backlash LP 1967 ? Now on my list. Love Hubbard's playing in that time. Can't believe I don't own it, but that will be sorted soon!! P.S. on the Sidewinder - most remarkable thing about that is...

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
Okay, a question (mainly for our boy macc, but everyone can reply). Let's take this for an example of a really well done "hot mix": There's some headroom at the start, but the kick is already getting smashed to 0db hard. Once this drops the signal is practically all red all the time, yet ...

Re: how likely to blow speakers/hearing damage?
Once upon a time I hit stop on a track, went out to the pub, got pissed, came back and was unlocking the door thinking 'WTF is that noise?!'. Turned out to be the feedback in a delay plugin... It had basically disappeared as I left, but built back up over time and ended up screaming out to all the n...

Re: Plug-ins effect on mixing
Ideally, the perceived level in and out of any process should be the same.
How can you judge the difference in SOUND (which is the point of doing whatever you're doing) if the output signal is much louder or quieter than the input?

Re: Any mastering engineers - headroom?
You just turn your master fader down until the peak level is -6dBFS.
That might mean turning it down 1dB, it might mean turning it down 30dB if you're mixing like a nutcase and clipping everything by 24dB.

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
Analog clipping isn't as dangerous as digital clipping though, right? Ive seen desks being pushed to the red and still sound brilliant. (or is this the point? I didn't get the wording totally..) Clipping converters isn't analogue clipping, it's very very much more like digital clipping, but not 100...

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
There's nothing new in mixing that way - it's no secret or anything like that. We've had conversations about the same thing on here in the past (possibly with Rob Sparx if I remember rightly...?) There's a few points to consider here; - First things first: Clipping's not magic. Often carefully contr...

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
All of this is not visually helped by the scaling on DAW metering -14BFS looks incredibly low relative to the top of the meter (usually around 1/2 way up or so) when in fact it is electrically not far from a signal level of about 0VU. This is a very good point - some DAWs allow you to adjust the of...

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
I see what your saying man, thanks for the advice, so in essence you are saying there is no difference between mixing as close to 0 as you can and then pulling the master fader down to -4 OR mixing to -4 and leaving the master fader where it is? There's no mathematical difference. There are numerou...

Re: gain structure and mixing aka THE MONEYSHOT THREAD
Ideally you don't need to move the master fader at all. Look at your question again - you're making yourself do an extra step that you don't need to do if you simply start lower in the first place. Ok, so moving the master fader is hardly a big deal, but the 'hidden' benefit of never moving it is th...
