- Referring to the LOUD thing above – trying to make your mixdown loud by smashing it before sending it to your ME is almost always detrimental to the final quality. If the thing is distorting every time the bass hits, there’s no way of getting rid of it properly. Think of it like toast, the ME can...

Thanks man. What bugs me is that a) we never sell any records and b) all these tunes are 5+ years old and I never get the time to write anything these days. Haven't even programmed a beat in over a year! Mate, I know the feeling. All too well unfortunately. I'm going to just say sod it soon & g...

[/quote] actually this helped a bit. I was wondering if there was a specific answer or something that perhaps I just didn't know yet. I mean, theoretically, since I'd be using samples that had already been mastered, I'd think I wouldn't have to do a whole bunch but I didn't know if there was a defin...

Hi Rosco, by "mix limiter" I mean any limiter (I.E. "ultramaximizers" or "loudness boosters" etc.) on the main output - anything that basically chops the peaks off the waveform & makes it look like a brick! The final stereo waveform should resemble the shape of some...

Sorry for the blatant self-pimping (I'm not the only Mastering engineer on this thread doing it though eh?) Just got this nice quote through from Richard Rogers, Ex-Head of A&R for Warner Chapell/International consultant/manager/owner of Music 2 Deal etc. etc. etc. "In my 25 years within th...

Hi Rosco, for regular mastering just send a stereo wav/aiff @ the highest quality you can. No mix limiters please, or I start to cry. What you're talking about with sending vocals etc. separately is called stem mastering. I do offer that, but it's a lot more money. In general, if your mix is decent ...

cheers Gilles, the Mix Evaluation is unique to us, as far as i know. Not everybody has great monitoring and acoustics (i was making tunes for years with the shittest setup known to man, so i know what it's like!) At the end of the day me & you both want the same thing - to make your tune sound t...

[quote="nowaysj" And what is w/ Benga's Diary of an Afro Warrior? That stuff always sounds too loud to me. Like if I'm listening to it mixed w/ other stuff, I've always gotta turn the Benga tracks down? [/quote If you want some interesting reading/viewing, Google "loudness wars" ...

Yes yes, some serious baddness coming from the Depone, and that Martello track was very tasty indeed! Just a quick add-on, I want to make a point that as Alvin/Martello rightly observed, when getting tunes professionally mastered it's all about the nuances & detail that gets revealed via optimis...

Biggup Lowpass, that tune was heavy! Megaladon - it is a free offer man, but just to clarify, you don't get a whole track back that you can just send out to radio, play out in a club or release. I master it & then send it back with some A/B cuts with the original for you to hear exactly what's g...

Absolutely! If you have any specific needs for your project you shouldn't hold back from consulting with your ME during any stage of the process. On the flipside if you want your track optimised but aren't sure of what's involved, you shouldn't feel you HAVE to ask specifics and you can leave it to ...

This is a great thread. Speaking as a fellow mastering engineer, Maccs advice is absolutely spot-on. I always sigh when i'm sent a track with Fuck-all headroom! One thing i'll add is ALWAYS mix down at 24 bit or higher if sending to an ME as the issue of degradation is minimised and the doubters can...

Big ups to everyone who's been taking the time to compile info for everyone. I'm getting some pre-mastering advice ready for my site, so when it's up i'll put a link up too, hope you'll find it useful. Wicked to see so many hungry producers on the site!
