Having a look through the Dusk + Blackdown mixes would be one of the best options http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.co.uk/

Excorcise the Demons sounds nothing like any 130 I've heard. Source Direct in general, yes, that album, nah. Otherwise pretty good list.

garethom wrote:Garethom's "I'm Sure Ehbes Will Disagree With This" Guide To 130 In His IMO.

Tha Pa$t
Ruff Sqwad - White Label Classics
Pangaea - Inna Daze/Won't Hurt
Musical Mob - Pulse X
Artwork - Red EP
Kahn & Neek - Gorgon Grime
A Guy Called Gerald - Black Secret Technology
Source Direct - Exorcise The Demons

Putting together this list got me looking through my collection at stuff you should probs listen to that would help understand where the sound has come from IMO. White Label Classics is the only grime compilation you need, I'm sure pretty much all the producers mentioned in this thread have bummed them off at some point. The Red EP is the most prominent mix of that grime and early dubstep sound that you can hear in a lot of 130 stuff. The Gorgon Grime tape is good as a snapshot of the grime-y pirate shows that probs influenced nuff man in the thread. It's hard to explain why I picked Inna Daze/Won't Hurt. Once you know a bit more about 130, it'll probs be easier to hear the similarities in the vibes. I put those two jungle albums at the end, because imo, there's a lot of junglist influences in 130, a lot of similar sounds, vibes, sampling styles, etc.

Tha Cla$$ic$
Keysound Recordings - This Is How We Roll
Wen - Commotion EP
Beneath - No Symbols 001/002
Bias & Gurley - Roll
Wen vs Epoch - Hydraulics
Logos - Kowloon EP

Pretty much, if you only wanted to pick up one release, grab the Keysound compilation. Basically has all the best artists and the best tunes IMO. Epoch, Rabit, Wen, Beneath, Visionist, etc. probably one of the best compilations I own. Worth bagging for The Steppenwolf alone. I picked the Wen release because he's probably the most prominent producer in the scene, and it's his best release. Really dark and sparse, can tell it was heavily influenced by 06 dubstep as much as anything else. The two Beneath releases are quality. I actually prefer his release on Keysound, but I think his self-released stuff is probably more representative of him as a whole. Picked the Bias & Gurley release just to pay tribute to two OG's making garage. Blackdown's remix is sick too. The Wen vs Epoch release got on there because it's probs the primary example of how hard this stuff is to classify, hence the name "130" Finally, the Kowloon EP got on there because it's the best release in the scene imo. It's cold as fuck, spacious, heavy as even though it's basically just four devil mixes (tunes where all/most of the percussion is removed).

Tha L£ftfi£ld
Filter Dread - Space Loops
Filter Dread - Hyper Lost
Unknown To The Unknown - Tales From The Dark Side
Kid Smpl - Skylight
Della - Young Kid

Finally, some stuff that other people might overlook or doesn't fit so perfectly into the confines of this thread. First off, Filter Dread is a serious G. Makes music like nobody else. Space Loops is a massive mix of a tune of tunes, from the gnarliest grime, to the most old school breaks. This was the release that made me think to include Black Secret Technology further up the list. Imagine that album, but possessed by grime demons. Hyper Lost is pretty much the perfect example of how far you could take grime and dubstep if you really wanted to. The Unknown To The Unknown compilation showcases more of the garage-y side (even a bit of bassline). With the Kid Smpl release, don't let bre's mug you off with this "Night Bus" shit. The guy is heavily influenced by grime, stuff like Wiley's devil mixes, but is equally as influenced by ambient artists and Burial, etc. Great switch up, and not as aggy as the rest of the stuff. The Della release is dark as fuck, great sampling, really edgy stuff. Remixes are sick too.

Hope this helps man!

For the most part I agree with that list. My left field would be slightly different but other than I'm good with that

speaking of pangaea, i'd add his remix of commix' "how you gonna feel"
photek's "124" - even if it's @ 124 bpm, i personally hear a lof of similarities between this and dubstep, 130 stuff etc
dnd's "ex ex dub"
toasty's "cold blooded" - 140, but still...
i'd also add cooly g as an influence, or at least someone who was on this sorta vibe years ago
not to mention untold - gonna work out fine ep
maybe not "essential" but w/e

i disagree on this is how we roll having the best tunes from those artists, but that's just personal preference

Fairs man. :Q: Just for me, some of the sampling on there, pads, etc. just reminded me of some of the stuff like Filter Dread and Etch. Yeah, Source Direct in general, but I didn't wanna list 20 releases by them.

Hope y'all bros see that I was trying to keep it short-ish, because I didn't wanna end up with bods being like "you forgot producer x" and everyone else being like, "what about producers a, b, c, d, e, f, y, z, etc.".

Throw your suggestions out there bro, would be interested in hearing some new names.

i tbhink weve all learned from this thread that the '130' stuff is a lot less about bpm and more about the vibes

also with regards to garethoms list

i'd definitely add mssingo xe2 ep to the classics, even though its just came out ^^

No Wen and Facta releases went under the radar in here man! Same for Missingno, whereas I'm pretty sure I'm the only person that's mentioned Filter Dread or Kid Smpl in here #hipster #BetterAt130ThanAllYall

That last one though. :4:
