How much would it cost to have a night?

Post by xlyr » Sat Oct 01, 2011 8:54 pm

So my friends and I were throwing around the idea of having a night. Preferably dark room, good system, something like 8 pm - 4 am. Planning on doing all weighty stuff. There just doesn't seem to be any place around here (Southern California) that does something like this.

How much would it run us to do something like this? Any possible dangers/problems? I'm just trying to get an idea as to if this would be possible.

it's more work than you'd expect... also starting at 8 would not work (although I guess that's down to where you are). Cost mainly depends on who you wanna book. That'll be your primary outgoing, followed by printed promo.

well first u gotta find a venue, london is pretty much impossible to start a new night especially if u have no reputation or past experience, then there are the overlays, sometimes there is a minimum spend, one such pub asked me for 500 quid min spend for a sat night, thats a big deal if ur promotion goes down the shitter, then there are the managers, usually wankers with no real brain capacity or interest in ur night- nor the music policy for that matter. the main deal is to get numbers to ur club through bookings, but that too can cost money, allez allez, who arent dubstep, but relatively well known in the uk for their walls project for example cost me 200 quid.

all in all organsiing a night from scratch is a mega hassle and takes a lot of organisation...good luck!

I'm actually on pretty good terms with some guys who already run some underground Hardcore/DnB/Dubstep parties in downtown LA so I figured I could try to get them to help me out

It's about dropping a track at the wrong speed, and it sounding better than the real thing.

It all comes down to your location & where you want to hold the event.
Also you'll have to invest in some proper security in case anything breaks out.
(& if you don't have security the cops will shut you down)
Oh & thanks for trying to bring something other than midrange cack here to california :3:

Yeah that's a good point, shouldn't be too big of a problem though.

Of course. One of the last shows I went to a guy dropped Anti-War Dub then proceeded to bust midrange for the next hour

Costs:

Rent - generally a few hundred, depending on the deal & venue
Bookings - hundred or two for a local line-up, anywhere between 500 and 4,000 for an international.
Printing - hundred quid ish for a load of posters and flyers
Rider & beers etc - €50 ish depending
Decor etc - there's always little things you need to buy like a staple gun, or a load of black material.

So it could cost anywhere from about €500 up, but you should get it back on the door if you're any good at promotion.

Thanks for actually outlining the costs for me man. This looks doable if we do everything right

Now I'm starting to wonder, is there anyone in the LA area who would want to come play an hour if I get this going?

there is no point unless there is literally no decent clubs in ur location otherwise try and send a mix off to an already existing promoter and get on warm up duties that way u dont incur any cost.

There really isn't anywhere around here that does that kind of thing so that's why I figured we kinda have to do it ourselves.
