Running A Night - How To? / Advice?

Post by TooMuch » Fri May 11, 2012 12:07 am

I've always been intrigued as to what it takes to host a night and the key and important aspects of making it successful.

I recently traveled down to Bristol with a few mates, one of which was on the bill for the opening night. Set up by a bunch of students, 'ILKIN' rented out TIMBUK2 (which you may have heard of/been to) and ran a pretty much successful night with Synkro as their headliner. Obviously to carry on a night they need to make money and a profit but I was trying to figure out where the money would come from? They obviously have to pay their artists but im not sure the amount of people who turned up @ £3/4 on.the.door would cover that? Altho it was pretty packed I dunno if there was over 100 - 150 people in there.. Then theres the cost of hiring the club?

It got me thinking... WHAT DOES IT TAKE?

Things to think about:

-Location
-Venue
-Artists
-Promotion
-Local Scene
-Staff (Bouncers?)

Any others???

I did have a look around to see if there were any threads about similar and I do get the feeling there will be one somewhere but nothing came up on google and in the advance search bar...

Now im based in Huddersfield (at uni) and it is fair to say the music scene here is piss poor. From seeing it myself I would never invest any money into a night in Huddersfield. Kryptic Minds played here last year in front of about 5 of us. We got the first ever play of Badman VIP i believe but ffs it was cringeworthy.

Anyone who has lived here will tell you the same. The nights that appear are nothing special. They have the right idea but I genuinely believe there is no target market. These nights that crop up I see the same familar faces and tbh most of these people are now my mates. For us we have to travel to Leeds and Manchester to see some of our favourite names... Hit&Run (of Manchester) tried to make something of a Thursday night here in Huddersfield at the biggest club in town which gets rammed on a Wednesday for that average club night with chart, rnb, indie music but they had a shocking opening night in which about 30 people turned up with the likes of Redlight on the bill. It was freshers week too and tbh it was no fault of their own IMO as they did a lot of flyering and got the word about.

You don't need a night in Hudds when you've got everything you could possibly want in Leeds!

Stayed with my mate at Storthes Hall when we went to that Substance night at Vox, not even that long getting to & from Leeds when you're fucked.

Haha mate i make that trip to Leeds oh so often. Think i've attended every DMZ/Exodus this year at VOX. I don't mind making the trip to Leeds and like i said i'd never put any money into a night in Hudds. Ever. Im just interested because im kinda sat on a bit of money and would love to do it one day. Not saying i'd do it in Hudds im talking more general!

But again... theres people out there into the right tunes in Hudds but you would never get that impression. Don't think ive ever seen a scene so poor. We even had to cancel Skream & Benga at one point. There is no hope for this place.
