Is Windows 8 any good, or are there major issues?

Post by wub » Fri Mar 28, 2014 9:26 am

Is it switching to Windows 8 on a new PC, or are there sufficient issues with it as an OS to warrant sticking with Windows 7?

I started using it about a week ago and I don't understand the complaints to be honest, you can switch straight to a desktop that's pretty much the same as 7.The default programmes for music, pictures, video are all bullshit but they can be easily changed

There's no start menu with all your programmes listed which is kind of gash

Is it down the bottom like with a Mac?

its fine, a few changes but i run everything through desktop mode. start menu opens up the metro view, but you can just press start and start typing what you want, will search for it just like in 7. I have no complains really.

Been using it for about a year

honestly the complaints are unfounded, although it can be frustrating the first time you use it (turning your pc off is fairly nonsensical)
otherwise it's the best version of windows yet, but the metro 'start' menu takes some getting used to

haven't had any compatibility problems either

And any major issues between 32bit and 64bit that people know of?

Been using it for the last year and it seems pretty stable. No issues or complaints

Unless you have a very weak PC I don't think there's any reason to go for 32bit

Get a program such as start is back http://startisback.com/ and no need to worry about the metro interface.

If you've got a touchscreen laptop, it's great... I'm not sure I'd be such a fan if I only had a mouse.

Runs everything I need it to and it boots up ridiculously fast. Had a bit of a problem with the sliders in Ableton, but fixed it with a config file hack.

well ive seen issues with compatibility with certain usb devices (a couple of midi usb devices). also it gets annoying when the thing with all the squares pops up but other than that its a bit like 7.

I thought the Start button was back as of 8.1?

I haven't used Windows myself since my Windows 7-running desktop broke down last year, but from what I hear 8.1 is pretty decent. I really liked 7 and it seems like most of the changes from that are visual which personally doesn't bother me much.

The performance/functionality improvements in 8/8.1 are actually very good. The UI is still pretty pants but theres plenty of apps you can use to revert the look back to 7.

surely getting 8 and then using something to turn it back into 7 defeats the object?

no, because the only bad thing about windows 8 is the user interface. the actual underlying improvements in architecture and performance make it worth the upgrade.

Waste of $$$. Performance improvements are marginal.
I guess if you want to use it for a mobile/touchscreen device it might be worth it for the improved ui.

The no start bar is fucking shit, my desktop is a constant mess now.

Yeah, the Start/Metro searching is actually really good too. I never used to use it in 7 because I was so used to navigating the Start Menu, but now I've been forced to, I have to admit it really is a MUCH better way of getting to your shit quickly.

Do yourself a favor and install Windows 2000.
