What a two years folks! Its been a wonderful run of monthly events and we appreciate all the support over the last 2 years. The Surya crew is revving up with tons of great events, upcoming projects, new music releases. We are going international for our special anniversary celebration with special guest 2562 from Holland who is making a big splash bridging the Dubstep and techno communities. Fans of minimal, dub, and Dubstep – this is for you! Performer extraordinaire, the one and only Gaslamp Killer, cuts, scratches, gets on the mic and entertains like no other dropping hip hop bombs, crunky Dubstep and Flying Lotus melodics. And finally local hero Lud Dub always knows what time it is and has delectable selection pon riddims, ya dunno! This will be the last monthly event as we will be focusing on more one-off events going forward so don’t miss it!
2562 (Tectonic, 3024 - Netherlands)
Imagine the perfect liaison between dubstep style rhythm and bass, deep techno soundscapes and unusual sampling ethics: sexy, deep and energetic at the same time. That’s the mission behind 2562, the low-end project of Dutchman Dave Huismans. After producing and occasionally releasing a mix of house, techno and broken beat since a couple of years, 2007 saw him surprise the dubstep world under a new and anonymous moniker, the number 2562 representing his area code on the west coast of Holland in gloomy The Hague. His uptempo, techno-infused bass transmissions such as Channel Two, Kameleon and Techno Dread – released on DJ Pinch’s respected dubstep label Tectonic from Bristol – found their way onto the decks of everyone from Mary Anne Hobbs, Skream, Kode 9 and Mala to Pole, Anthony Shake Shakir, Laurent Garnier and all those who have their ears primed for heavy bass, deep funk and spatial dub. 2008 brought his debut album ‘Aerial’, melding genres with a distinctive futuristic production style to wide acclaim, followed by sought after experimental releases for his techno project A Made Up Sound, a.o. on the Hardwax-affiliated Subsolo label. The buzz around his releases got him booked to play at UK dubstep-strongholds such as Subloaded, FWD and Sub Dub, but also at international high profile clubs such as Fabric (London), Berghain (Berlin) and 11 (Amsterdam), as well as numerous festivals and underground locations from Scandinavia to Japan and from Greece to Siberia. But 2562 is not a producer-turned-dj after a couple of his records did well. Having been a vinyl fiend and full-on beatfreak since his youth he’s a proper selector who enjoys working the decks and making a trip out of a dj-set. Expect lots of fresh dubs from him and others, mixed up with the odd unexpected classic.
The Gaslamp Killer (Low End Theory - LA)
Like a monster from the deep, The Gaslamp Killer strikes hard and fast, his voracious musical style leaving speaker damage across North America, Asia and Europe. A compatriot of Surya Dub's March headliner Flying Lotus, but with a style all his own, the LA-based DJ rips up styles so fast it'll make your head spin. His sound takes in Egyptian Pyschedelics, wobbly UK dubstep, and bone-crunching breaks, but ultimately his style is rooted in hip-hop, from Ghostface to Dabrye to Shadow to Dilla, always with an ear for the gritty and strange. To see him perform is to watch the devil's hands at work, but Gaslamp chanels that energy to your dancing feet and is sure to raise a cheer from throats. Must be seen to be believed, but if you need a primer, check out his mixtape "I Spit On Your Grave" released on Shep Ferry's Obey Records.
Lud Dub (Cosmic Vibe, Bass Response)
Lud Dub is a SF-based DJ, writer, and entrepreneur with over 15 years of experience in the music industry. Known for his versatility in playing out a wide range of genres ranging from Reggae/Dancehall, Dub/Dubstep, Breaks, and Drum ‘n’ Bass; he’s always pushing the musical boundaries. In addition to laying the foundation for his new record label, Bass Response Recordings, Lud Dub recently helped launch Big Up Magazine showcasing underground music, art, and street culture.
