Hmmm This is really getting on my tits

Post by xpresive » Thu Apr 23, 2009 5:05 pm

Look i hate 2 sound like a toy, but how in gods name does burial make those heavinly sound waves he calls drum loops?

I litrelly cant nail it.

Im asuming he uses a basic kick and snare / side stick with a chopped up drum loop, correct me if im wrong.

What drum loops does he use? like jazz? funk? or wha?

Please help me im dieing here.

And just so u know. This drum style wont be used in similar choonage as burial, so dont think im a copy cat :P

Any Help will be greatly appreciated

Its not as complicated as it sounds. He just sampled a lot of vinyl 2-step garage beats. Due both to his chopping them up, and his shoddy equipment, it sounds like it does. (And keep in mind he made the records back in 1999/2000-2002, and didn't drop them until years later).

I can't remember the interview where this is stated (it was a good, deep one, like 6 pages of text), but its not that complicated. Sample beats. Re trigger start points. Low pass. Done.

there are a couple of good threads in here about this and Ketamine is right on target.

Try making 2 steppy beats, entirely unquantized. Throw in random percussion sounds and you have it!

It was probably the same interview but he said something about using samples from video games, like picking up ammo crates etc in his beats?

I read somewhere that a main reason his drums sound so unquantized and perfectly off time is that he created the loops in cubase freehand. No grid, no markers, just how it sounded 'right' to him at the time. If thats what youre after maybe try that instead of chopping the loops up in somehthing with beat grid.

That's strange you think his sounds are lush - I think the album sounds kind of crappy from a sound quality perspective, but that is a huge part of the appeal and charm. JUST TO BE CLEAR - I am a huge Burial fan.

Read that article in Wired. He uses different reverb settings on different instruments. Samples and re-samples a ton. Samples video games, etc. Is that helping?

take a whole bunch of sidesticks, use some as hats, take a fair bit of eq off the top, add a load of reverb, and yeah that kinda thing. Thing is, his drums are a large part of his fame so trying to imitate his amazingly shoddy but impossible technique is just silly.

wooly kicks, bandpassed hats, and gritty rimclicks. no idea if that's how he processes stuff, but that definitely what they sound like.

erm? what?

This is untrue. He made Untrue after Burial came out for a fact.

Dunno if he made Burial around that time but, I doubt it.

I still think that is a lie. No way you can do what he did on Sound Forge. You might be able to do it on the current version but not the version that he would have had.

edit: actually it wasnt that hard

Wire: What did you think when people were saying that you hadn’t produced it all in Sound Forge, it’s a scam.

Burial: Who?

Wire: People on the internet, saying he can’t possibly have done that whole album in Sound Forge.

Burial: Really? Yeah well I did. I'll leave those people to their internet or whatever. Yeah I wish sometimes that I’d gone to college to learn music production, but other times I’m like ‘no, fuck, I’m happy I didn’t’.

I don’t really go on the internet, it’s like a ouija board, it’s like letting someone into your head, behind your eyes. It lets randoms in.
