I'm writing a research essay about Dubstep and DnB. Just wondered if anyone would like to answer any of the question listed below for me.

1/ Is dubstep going mainstream?

2/ Is it a bad thing if it does goes mainstream?

3/ Will it affect the way you would feel as a dubstep fan if it becomes more visible to populare culture and the mainstream?

4/ How will it affect the production of dubstep if major labels start producing dubstep orientated music?

5/ Pendulum lost a lot of support from their DnB purist fans, when releasing their second album. Could the same thing or has the same thing happened within the dubstep scene?

1. No, because of the sub foundation. Mainstream listeners don't want heavy heavy bass and they don't have the system to experience dubstep. Imagine dubstep being played in your dentist's office through the ceiling speaker, I don't think so! Also, because of the dark elements.

2. No not a bad thing. It will help bass gain acceptance and there will always be a cutting edge that is underground. However, the name will lose it's freshness and the real shit will probably be called something else.

3. Yes, I will feel less exclusive. But if people are into the same tracks i'm into, then I'll feel good that I can share more with the common man. Plus I can probably make some money playing it.

4. Dubstep is a grassroots movement of producers. Majors can try, but the premiere producers will still be murdering sound like KRS-1.

5. That Pendulum album was crap.

6. A lot of any music from any genre is mediocre, so yes. Who cares?

7. Snoop added flavour. It's a good version. I think Eastern Jam is good, but can get monotonous after the drop.

Is dubstep going mainstream?
Nah. No underground scene has ever fully gone mainstream as such. Apart from Hip-Hop and Rock, but both have a bigger underground. Drum and Bass is still very much underground, but has alot of mainstream releases.

Is it a bad thing if it does goes mainstream?
If it did, I doubt it would make any difference. It would bring in new producers and DJ's and new talent. People would be inspired and interested in learning more about the music. I can only see that as a good thing to be honest. Only problem I see is that the fans of the mainstream Dubstep won't be familiar with the underground stuff, so you'll possibly have a huge percentage of people saying they dislike the underground stuff. Just like Kanya Wests teenage fans don't really like or listen to NWA, Cyprus Hill etc.

Will it affect the way you would feel as a dubstep fan if it becomes more visible to populare culture and the mainstream?
No. Will just mean more people understand what I mean when I say "I listen to Dubstep". All my friends at uni have never heard of it.

How will it affect the production of dubstep if major labels start producing dubstep orientated music?
I think Hip Hop is an example of what would happen if Dubstep went mainstream. Both are related in the sense that both scenes are very open in terms of production. There are no standards or boundaries as there is in other scenes.

Possibly as people see mainstream as a bad thing. They forget to realize that they only reason an artist goes mainstream is because so many people like them. Thus their music becomes "Popular Music".

Are there elements of clownstep appearing in Dubstep?
The genre is infinitely variable. Lots of genres cross over into Dubstep. It's still Dubstep though. The roots of Dubstep are taken from Dub but I don't think that applies as much any more.

What are your views of Snoop Doggy Doggs track Snoop Dogg Millionaire?
I love it. Chase and Status produced it, so the pioneers are still involved. It's good to see mainstream hip hop artists crossing over and doing something new. Dubstep is huge in the USA so I assume alot of these artists are familiar with Dubstep.

They will die out like flies under a swatter, timbaland will fund a new 'dubstep only' studio in toteness, nobody will know how to find it though, apart from when justin timberlake makes his annual visit to devon and cornwall. i predict number 1 hits from them, it'll overshadow the existing labels and kill off the scene as we know it.

pendulum had purist dnb fans did they? i allways thought it was 16 year old heavy metal fans who liked them.. anyway, the anwer is yes, and no, but yes.. even people like Kodac9 hates the dubstep scene now, we should all move on to funkydubstep house now.

i've seen some the first three elements of clownstep at a few dubstep raves.

1. juggling balls instead of a mixer
2. twentyseven djs all came out of the same fiat polski at a rave once
3. hillariously oversized trousers instead of well expensive fenchurch jeans

no, just some people are opening routes to a bit of success in the mainstream. the genre will always be underground.

2/ Is it a bad thing if it does goes mainstream?
not really if the music isnt compramised, but the rave scene would obviously be very different which i wouldnt like so much.

3/ Will it affect the way you would feel as a dubstep fan if it becomes more visible to populare culture and the mainstream?
not really but id probably like it a bit lol. the fact that everyone would know what im into.

4/ How will it affect the production of dubstep if major labels start producing dubstep orientated music?
they will try to corner the sound a bit, whether that rubs off or not i dunno. major labels like control control control rather than letting creativity breath.

dunno, maybe. depends on how people go with the music into the future.

beat has been rinsed, edits nt useful, vocalist bit makes me cringe and im nt a fan of commercial hip hop so there is no appeal for me. that said it is a stepping stone for possible future collabs that could be better and its useful for the artists in the scene.
