Whats with these words used to describe dubstep.
Whats with these words used to describe dubstep.
If there is another thread already related to this topic please post a link.
I have been listening to dubstep for around 8-9months now and I've always been confused on why everyone on youtube comments on dubstep songs saying how filthy and dirty the song is. Why do people say they are filthy, how is calling a bassline or a song filthy a compliment. If anyone can shed some light on this topic for me it will be greatly appreciated.

A pal of mine is always asking why people use incorrect words to describe things.
I've begun to think he is tragically un-hip.

Just because you are a character, does not mean you have character.
Re: Whats with these words used to describe dubstep.
I did a small lol the first time I set eyes on one of those 'filth' metaphors that usually include the terms 'gutter' 'nan' 'shat' and 'vomitted'.
But now literally every jump-up Dubstep youtube vid from the Circle gang has pages of comments with slightly altered phrases saying the same thing, uh.
BLUDD DIS DUB'S SO FILTHY I CHAINSAW'D MA NAN AND SHAT DOWN HER ESOPHAGUS.
Shut up.

Its just as bad when people say a tune is deep though. That's really annoying.

Those Youtube comments are dumb as fuck! However, dirty has been used as a word to describe the more raw, grainier basslines since forever. Hello - GRIME music. Filthy is just another variation. Screwfacebass.
I don't really use these terms (maybe grimy), but are you seriously saying that whenever you comment (not as in on Youtube lol) on a track you use only literal terms? Golly that square wave bassline has been EQd and processed to perfection, and also has been sequenced in such a way that it makes me feel various emotions.

Re: Whats with these words used to describe dubstep.
we live in a time when people constantly abuse language. Instead of taking advantage of the vast array of adjectives available in so many languages, people use broad, general terms to describe everything.
"How was the movie?"
"The movie was sick"
"Man, the sunset looks so cool"
"This bassline is filthier than a shitvomit stew"

It's not an abuse of language - it is exactly how language has always evolved.
Re: Whats with these words used to describe dubstep.
Grime -> Grimey -> Dirt-> Dirty -> Filth -> Filthy -> Shit down your nans neck.
Natural progression really.

I am not saying that when I comment on something I use literal terms I was just wondering why people started refereeing to dubstep songs as filthy or dirty. I normally just call tracks I like cool or sick but I was curious about the origin of the terms filthy and dirty. But I have to say using literal terms like you did is going to be something I will do more often just because I found it funny as fuck.daddy mchectic wrote: I don't really use these terms (maybe grimy), but are you seriously saying that whenever you comment (not as in on Youtube lol) on a track you use only literal terms?
