Where to start with Jungle?
I like old Jungle, but I really don't know where to start since it was before my time. I also didn't really know where I should get it from since most of the stuff isn't pressed any more. However I recently found a DnB record shop close to where I live and it has a lot of Jungle from the 90s there, but when I looked through it must of the names and tunes were meaningless to me.
So basically I was wandering if you could suggest any popular good artists and tunes that are worth picking up if I see them there. It probably isn't worth mentioning obscure personal favourites as it's unlikely he guy will have them stocked there.
Cheers.

Re: Where to start with Jungle?
Thanks for the advice guys, a few of those artists I new about but a lot I didn't.
Actually looking for labels is probably the best idea coming to think of it because there's probably more chance of me spotting something by one of them that way, and a good label will usually be putting out consistently good music from a variety of artists

Re: Where to start with Jungle?
true, but with jungle it doesn't work 100% that wayAlty wrote: Actually looking for labels is probably the best idea coming to think of it because there's probably more chance of me spotting something by one of them that way, and a good label will usually be putting out consistently good music from a variety of artists
a lot of tracks you might want to check out are pressed by labels with maybe less than 10 releases.
it's not unusual to see good releases pressed by labels with only two releases.
the thing that always worked for me is checking out dj sets to discover new music, they're a bit like compilation, but with a wider range than a commercial release that a compilation cd truly is.
register to http://goldenerajungle.com/php-files/news.php
start downloading sets
check the tracklists
educate yourself on this because there's so much good stuff that a reinforced fan or a metalheadz addict will make you listen to tek 9 or j majik but there's plenty of stuff, there's tons of different styles to discover and basing yourself on someone elses opinion will keep your finds limited

Pick up the Jungle Mania compilations. That's what got me started all those years ago when I used to nick 'em off my older brother, if it wasn't for that series of compilations I think my life would be very different.

I bought the first one of those when it came out. My brain hasn't worked properly ever since, and I still have to listen to it every few months to remind me how good drum & bass used to be.mr hyde wrote:The old 'Drum & Bass Selection' compilations are a good start.
