it's a shame that when someone tries to start a discussion (even if it touches an apparently controversial subject, as in this thread), dubstepforum explodes into absolute 'it's all music, who cares, don't tell me what to listen to' madness.

yes, it's all music. no, people shouldn't care too much about which sub sub subgenres there are, etc. but i don't think we should underestimate or ignore the importance of labelling music (to a certain extent, of course!).

back when people first started making (what we now know as) dubstep, it didn't have a name. when the term 'dubstep' became the accepted word to describe a certain type of 140 bpm bass heavy music, people knew what they could expect; people knew what to google for; people knew where to look in record shops.

the OP makes a fair point, in my opinion, because dubstep music has become so broad, it's hard to find what you're looking for, and it can be frustrating for a lot of people when the term dubstep is used to describe the more electro house influenced type of music (that obviously has a lot of basic elements in common with 'old school' dubstep), because it simply isn't the same thing.

it seems very elitist to claim the word dubstep and to say, for example, skrillex isn't dubstep. what's even worse is to laugh it off (or go into rage mode) and say "it's all music, let's just listen to the tunes, don't worry about it", because it's come to the point where it's just not very practical to call everything around 140 bpm 'dubstep'.

Imagine being an Elvis Presley fan, asking someone for a rock & roll cd, and ending up with Slayer in your cd player. Of course there's a chance you'll like it, but it certainly isn't the type of music you were looking for, even though there's drums, bass, and guitars in it.
Same goes for liking Photek's tunes, and ending up with Pendulum records, loving mala's music, and ending up with borgore tunes.

EDIT: let it be known that i'm not a fan of subgenres at all. in drum 'n bass and metal it became absolutely ridiculous at a certain point. there's just a lot of confusion surrounding the genre of dubstep. it's a word that can get very frustrating, because (for example...) going to a dubstep night expecting to hear one type of music, and having to put up with music you don't like at all, is less than enjoyable.

As long as we understand what is meant by core or proppa dubstep
and that everything is orbitting at various radii from that,
in trajectories to or from other music such as electro, techno, reggae, garage, dub, house,
until it crosses a fuzzy penumbra to become defined by those words,

then, in that sense,
some of Bassnectar's digibass is in the dubstep sphere
whilst Skrillex travels at its outer limits, where you have to shout to be heard.

As for what constitutes core or proppa dubstep?
Well, nothing is at it's exact centre for me....
that's an emptiness being jostled by attempts at perfection.

of course. the bit from my post you quoted was a bit of an inaccurate example i guess (except when it's a local night with unknown djs or whatever). it was nothing more than an example as part of my 'i don't like sub sub sub subgenres' disclaimer though. it's what's above the edit that's important.

I didn't read Pomending that way....he was saying something more like: what some people refer to as dubstep isn't what he considers to be dubstep. That's a reasonable view for someone who's been around since the early days to hold.
He didn't say dubstep has to stay the same or that it can't progress...
imo some producers still make new, inventive tunes that reflect the mid-noughties roots; Cyrus, Clubroot, Lurker & Be-1ne for starters. They're not copying, they're reflecting what some of us think of as core/proppa/oldskool dubstep which has a huge variety of expressions and interpretations but, necessarily, has defining boundaries, otherwise it becomes something else....which maybe great or shit...but something else...glitch-hop, rave, post-dubstep, halfbeat dnb etc.
What you call "moving forward" Shy, others think of as "moving away" from what ds essentially is.

people seem to forget around 2005 , the majority of people HATED "dubstep" and said things like "This shit is boring !" "It's just slowed down DNB " etc ....


and then lo and behold its 2011 and everyones making dubstep but the majority of it actually became slowed down dnb . and the people saying they hated it are all headbanging in a mosh pit to midrange . it's hilarious really
