Yup, we Americans will destroy dubstep one song at a time...by telling a UK producer to release a song in the UK so it can go number 1 on the UK charts. Cuz we're that smart. o7fractal wrote:Proof that Americans are killing dubstep

Well I was trying to be sarcastic, or at least ironic. Being a card carrying member of the old fart brigade who was around to see techno break, house break, hip hop break, drum and bass break, etc, I can say with certainty that there is a ~5-10 year cycle or so from the point where the music you love is completely underground to when commercial artists start borrowing elements from the sound. Its only a matter of time before chart toppers are written with your favorite music style's influence all over it.dindin wrote:The trollings all good but would anyone have thought when it all started there would have ever been a tune with dubstep elements that got to number 1?
Although i only started listening in 07/08 i sure would'nt of thought so. Obviously its not too many peoples taste on here like myself but the development of the scene has been crazy.
People got RATM to xmas number 1 so i cant see why we all cant find one amazing tune which most people on dsf love and get that to number 1, give more of an education to the majority of people about the genre.
I can remember when drum and bass was literally underground. No one was a "junglist" as they had all come from something else, and no one else was doing anything like it. A few years later, every single hip hop track had funky drummer or winstons breaks style drums and samples from old soul funk and disco tracks over the top of that, with some dude rapping on it. It became a formula for the next 6 or 7 years.
Dubstep itself is an amalgimation of alot of other styles of music, so it doesnt surprise me that 7 or 8 years after it broke there are commercial artists whose albumes are rife with elements of that sound.

lots of good points and you're probably right. but just to be a pain in the arse, what do you mean by soul & funk breaks sampling in hip hop? that's like the age old classic hip hop formula, nothing to do with jungle/dnb i thinkq23 wrote:Being a card carrying member of the old fart brigade who was around to see techno break, house break, hip hop break, drum and bass break, etc, I can say with certainty that there is a ~5-10 year cycle or so from the point where the music you love is completely underground to when commercial artists start borrowing elements from the sound. jungle/dnb took sampling those breaks to new levels. chooping them speeding them pitching them. jungle especially. sampling is a staple in dnb/jungle for sure.topmo3 wrote:q23 wrote:dindin wrote: what do you mean by soul & funk breaks sampling in hip hop? that's like the age old classic hip hop formula, nothing to do with jungle/dnb i think

If we're not careful dubstep can become the next "core", you know like "grindcore", and "deathcore". Soon we'll have "dubstep", "brostep", "wubstep" and eventually "DISESTABLISHMENTARIANISMstep". Such is the evolution of a music genre.
Re: it's finally happened then.
... i dun think us yanks are to blame for this. could be wrong. we're just starting to process proper, less offensive halfstep over here, things are getting better.
but that... that was hilarious. tbh i thought the video was cool, but thats cuz im jealous of cool skateboarders and hot rollerskating booty shorts girls... cuz they seem to be so much better at having summer fun than I.

Petsstep for all the palindrome heads! Big up! Honestly, I challenge somebody to post some "dubstep" that samples dogs/cats/etc. I reckon it can be found in under 3 minutes.

Re: it's finally happened then.
Feeling the immense tone of dread in this track.
Just sounds like some 90's pop-trance tune with occasional KICK-GAP-SNARE halftime drums in. First time I've heard it, not the worst track ever, but another track that makes me less and less bothered about the charts.
Good music will always find its way to me anyway.
