Well mentioned some ideas on pads a few posts above. But for the initial pad, envelopes are your friend. Applying them to as much as possible, subtle lfos on various parameters, just making a lot of small movement within the sound. Use of the stereo field is essential in decent pad sounds imo, so try and get some movement there too! Hope that helpsdjcable wrote:Thought I'd get a cheeky question in before the thread gets locked off... It's been an insightful read so far.
Do you have any tips on creating decent pad sounds? Mine tend to sound either too dull or too cheesey...
P.S. Awakening is a classic tune. Big up.

Really enjoying most of it too my question is, when did you first realize that you were making quality tracks and what brought about that realization?
Really looking forward to you coming to Aus for Yellow Sunshine too! Went to the launch party on the weekend just gone, looks to be shaping up nicely.
Hmmm good question! I wouldn't say I hit a point of making tunes I thought were really good, but definitely a point where I could appreciate other people might like it. I guess it was in the first few instance of people talking about the music having a profound impact on some event in their life that I really thought on that kind of vibe.
I can't wait for Oz man, never thought I'd get the chance to travel somewhere like that!

Re: DSF Q&A Sessions 19: Phaeleh
That's kinda hard to define, but started pushing music more seriously around 2007, released a couple of eps myself in 2008 which definitely got my name out there initially, first couple of vinyls in 2009, and think started getting paid for gigs and releases more in 2010. I'd had a growing fanbase the whole time due to a silly amount of gigs + willingness to play for free. I think the 3 biggest catalysts were the Stella sessions mix I did for skream, the 2nd mix I did for electronic explorations and the biggie was the afterglo mix which chemical records gave away. I'd say I've only been doing this professionally since the end of 2010.Orphicmusic wrote:If you're still answering questions..

Hey mate, one of the best QnA's I've read, decent.
I love the whole melancholy guitars and melody approach you bring to the table..
For a bit of a different question... I also use my PodXT for recording guitars (used to have a Custom 24 as well but now have a Tele...), but sometimes struggle to get a decent tone to cut through the mix... what's your go to amps / cabs / etc?
Hope to see you in Perth when you make it down this way.
Peace.

Re: DSF Q&A Sessions 19: Phaeleh
Enjoying this thread, you're one of my fav producers at the moment so I need to get a question in!
In regards to vocals in your songs I always think they're spot on. Would you mind sharing how you go about fitting the vocal in with the track? Do you find the samples first and build the track around that, or do you just randomly find a sample that sounds good? Or do you know what sort of thing you're looking for and then go off searching for something to meet that criteria?
Im talking more about songs such as Lounge and In the twilight as apposed to the stuff with soundmouse where you actually work with the artist etc. Listening to in the twilight now and damn the vox add to it so nicely!

Hmm, to be fair I can't remember as use the same clean sound from a patch I made years ago. Pretty sure its the line6 clean sound or the amp one to the right on the dial. Fairly confident its a single 12, though might be a 4x12. I can install the software when back in bristol and have a look! I think a big factor is my high passing after I record and compression too. I also pan the guitars quite a lot so they have their own space in the stereo field. Doubling parts is also another good way of getting stuff to standout, though I'd always rerecord rather than duplicating the recorded audio. Also play with the pickup config. I normally record with setup 5 or 6 on my PRS, I know 5 is the neck pickup but can't remember what 6 is...ajfa wrote:Hey mate, one of the best QnA's I've read, decent.

I always do vox last with those kind of tunes. I have the Acapella archive sorted in keys, so don't waste too much time searching for stuff that fits.stranger_sounds wrote:Enjoying this thread, you're one of my fav producers at the moment so I need to get a question in!

I try to find words that are quite powerful and mean something to someone in different contexts. I try to only take 1 word from a tune these days, rather than all from the same acapella, this is to keep stuff varied and also to minimise the chance of lawsuits. Whilst there's a lot of filtering and processing on the vox, the most important thing for me is that they give an emotional response in the listener. Even if someone's hearing the words completely wrong, they still normally sing along using words which have some depth to them!

Hey big ups for the Q&A and also for your tunes.
No question, but I just wanted to say it's nice to see another user of the Events around, I still use mine and love them as well. I have Yamahas and had some KRK, but kept going back to the Events. I'm looking into their new line the 20/20BAS, but still don't plan on getting rid of the TR.

You bloody legend! Last I checked they discontinued everything apart from the recent Opals. So been living in fear that if I broke my TR8s that I wouldn't be able to afford to replace. They definitely look like a more direct replacement for mine so I can turn the volume back upwormcode wrote:Hey big ups for the Q&A and also for your tunes.
