Vidya game challenge

Post by ogunslinger » Wed Sep 12, 2012 8:36 pm

Hey whats up everyone,

I just came up with this idea yesterday *I'm sure it's been done* and I wanted to see if anyone would be down for this production challenge. Basically the challenge is, to construct a tune completely with samples only from a video game, so that means no synths etc...

We could all vote on which game to choose to pick the samples from, or we could choose our own games to sample from. I think it would be fun to only use consoles made on or before 1996, so basically N64 or Playstation 1 and anything made before them.

If anyone is down to do this lets set it up! But the deadline should be at least 2 weeks for the people that have work/school and or other obligations :)

Hah this sounds like a pretty fun idea. I think it might be quite good if each person used a different game and just sampled from that one and nowhere else for their tune.

What do you reckon the rules on effects/processing should be?

Sounds good to me, everyone just picks one game and samples only from that game.

As far as the rules go for processing & effects... I'm down for no rules :) I don't want to block anyones creative ideas :P
but seriously, we could even include granular synthesis *even though it's technically a synth*

I think the only sample that should/could be used outside of the video games is the kick drum. But seriously is anyone down for that?

I'm sure people can find plenty of kick drum replacements in video game sounds! Dont think extra kick samples should be allowed

Alpha Centauri would be a good one, its from 2000 and installs with a folder full of tuned samples (not much in the way of drums tho)

MGS :3:
half life 1 or 2(technically all the same sounds anyway)
portal 1 or 2
poke'mon (how rad would it be for everyone to work with 8-16bit? :D )

I mean the games are limitless!

Portal could be pretty cool (on a related note the portal 2 soundtrack is a free download, some incredible music in it!)

But I definitely thing this challenge has more appeal when limited to using older games with lofi sounds or 8bit/16bit stuff, ie 1996 and earlier as mentioned in the first post :)

I guess that means mine won't count then

Here it is anyway!

Soundcloud

Entirely made with samples from this youtube video:

The sub bass was probably the hardest thing, still sounds a bit silly but I'm not exactly gonna take this production seriously haha

1point5, get a melodic sample and bandpass it several times until you get a fundamental, then tune it and bam, you have sub bass. distort it and you have a saw wave.
