Re: How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass
Finally someone who knows what they're talking about..ninthy4 wrote:I'm going to tell you guys how it really is.
Just after Sonny (Skrillex) released his first EP, which he gave out for free and received critical acclaim Joel (Deadmau5) signed him to release on Mau5trap.
Joel payed Noisia to learn Sonny sound design and mixdown for his new EP, so Sonny visited Noisias studio in The Netherlands for a month or so (not sure).
Sonny does indeed produce his own music, but he have learned a LOT from Noisia, especially sound design. FM8 also turn out to be one of Noisias synths of choice.
He visited for 2 months (i'm pretty sure)
Shortly after, he released Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, the rest is history.
Flame me all you want, but i've always been a fan of sonny and always will!

How to really sound like Skrillex.
.
High Rankin has convinced me to share all my sounds in his latest Rankin Audio release.
I'm giving away all my bass sounds, drum hits and cheeky little lead lines in one big sample pack.
Here's what it sounds like:
Soundcloud
All the bass/drum sounds from my latest track 'Ain't No' are included along with lots of sounds from my other tunes.
Oh... and the fabled 'Filthzilla snare' is in there.
Download the pack at:
http://www.rankinaudio.com/shop/ultimate-drumstep
Enjoy.

Not much for sampling synths but hey, can't go wrong with some free samples. Thanks for sharing mate, could be cool to look at the sounds at the very least.
Bigups bruv!

The way the sounds are rendered, you'll have plenty to work with.Maxxan wrote:Not much for sampling synths

So you're giving away 3 bass sounds by the sounds of it.
Thanks Dan

A little more than three mate.
56 bass loops, most of those have a combo of a few different sounds.
24 bass one shots.
On top of all the drum loops, drum loops, music loops, synth hits, synth multis and FXs.

Yeah, I don't doubt you, it's just against my principles. I'll sample oneshots and stabs and stuff but basses are a bit taboo for me. I like your sounds though but that's why I would never use them, I'd feel a bit dirty haha. I'll have a look at them when I get home though, I'm sure it'll be educational to hear them alone etc. Nice of you do to this btw, most people are secretive about this stuff.Filthzilla wrote: The way the sounds are rendered, you'll have plenty to work with.
Some new FX and stuff is always great though, should be good. Thanks again mate!

Agreed, the main hook is usually the bass. If you sample/buy patches for your bass sound, it defeats the purpose.Maxxan wrote:Yeah, I don't doubt you, it's just against my principles. Well hooks come from the melody and tune you compose.outdropt wrote:Agreed, the main hook is usually the bass. If you sample/buy patches for your bass sound, it defeats the purpose.
Nice bass though.
If you have a strong riff but poor sounds, your loosing out on the element that will capture your audiences imagination the most; interesting sounds.
So having good sounds will support your riff, giving you a great hook.
YGM?
Re: How to really sound like Skrillex.
True, I think its okay to use synth/chord patches occasionally as long as you change it up.... But for bass, i think you need to develop on your own. A lot of the movement in a bass sound comes from the automation of nontraditional parameters that change the sound slightly, i find if you develop the sound you can find the slight variation's and understand what your doing a lot better then if all the marco's are setup to change the sound before hand. That and the fact that similar bass sounds sterilize the genre imo, i guess if you use it in the right way you can make something new but i still think its tacky.Filthzilla wrote:Well hooks come from the melody and tune you compose.outdropt wrote:Agreed, the main hook is usually the bass.
