Re: SOPHIE
Okay, changed my mind not giving up yet.
I'd like to try actually discuss the music, sorry if that's too much of a push.
What I really enjoy about the music is that it functions on so many levels. On one hand it's simply a really functional piece of pop music, you can really hear the craft here in terms of timbral choices, repeating motifs etc., but then there's a real underlying plastic sadness to the music also. It's this ecstatic fantasy but the music itself seems to communicate that this only is, and only can be a fantasy whilst it plays it out. It's like he's sublimating pop motifs and refining them to be as effective as they can abut then filling them with this post-modern dread, but in spite of this it's always fun to listen to and full of love.
That's why I have so much respect for SOPHIE. The music is super fun and amazing to dance to but still highly thought provoking. It's just super clever music.
On the other hand, some people just find it annoying. I guess I kind of understand that. I can't really see it though because I'm a huge of fan of italo and latin freestyle etc. so don't have much of a "cheese" filter.
Even if you hate it, surely you can respect that a reclusive London producer with such clear artistic vision and authentic roots who is doing something completely new is being called track of the summer by diplo and BNM by pitchfork etc.? Surely if there's going to be a crossover this is a better bet than Disclosure? Some might say Bipp is a bit too wierd for this but Ooh or something could easily get regular play on bbc1 etc (see link in my last post).
done.
I've tried
EDIT: lays out his vision much better than I can in this interview with John Roberts (who you should also really check out) http://supmag.com/2013/01/sophie/

Re: SOPHIE
Christ this is fucking awful bubblegum cack. The funny thing is some of the same people who say they enjoy it would also criticise Disclosure. If it was Fearne Cotton playing 'BIPP' rather than Jackmaster I'm not sure so many people would hold the same opinions.
Re: SOPHIE
sounds good to me.. elle sounds a lot like what night slugs was releasing like 3 yrs ago. like i was literally listening to some girl unit or jam city for the first time. fresh and lovely. big up i cannot possibly see how you lot view this as "bubblegum cack"?

Re: SOPHIE
BIPP is sick and so is ELLE - I would really have loved to hear this guy at Roskilde Festival - but i'm sadly not going this year.
And i don't understand why anyone would call this bubblegum cack either - it's a bit cheesy yeah, but so is Joker, Mensah, Girl Unit, etc. etc. at times. If you were expecting to hear some straight dungeon shit, you probably shouldn't have listened to an artist called SOPHIE in the first place.

Re: SOPHIE
Hadn't heard Elle. Was referring to bipp as bubblegum which can't really be argued with. Elle is a lot better but nowhere near as good as the likes of Jam City's stuff. A poor imitation really

Re: SOPHIE
Bit harsh to call it an imitation tbf, I agree its very similar to stuff Jam City puts out and agreed not as good.. but imitation is straight up insulting. Like saying most dubstep is a poor mala Imitation and anything Youngsta plays is a poor imitation of the One Of Us album.codeStep wrote:Elle is a lot better but nowhere near as good as the likes of Jam City's stuff. Influence or similarity is very different from imitation.
