That's not gonna change shit apart from giving some lawyer something to do and you a £1000 fine or if not months of avoiding bailiffs and fucking about

Yeah, you're right. Activism does fuck all. Much better to just bend over and let the government do whatever they want for an easy lifem8son wrote:That's not gonna change shit

Do you really think a few people not paying this fine will actually make the government change their policy on it? Would you really call that activism? So am i an activist for not paying my electricity bill will that make them stop making me pay?
If you want to stop this fine why not start a petition, go on a protest, occupy somewhere or whatever people do. Not registering to vote and having to pay a fine is not going to make the government decide it's a bad idea.
government can carry on fucking me in the ass if they want aint to painful tbh

You can't compare not paying for a product/service with refusing to register to vote, really.m8son wrote:Do you really think a few people not paying this fine will actually make the government change their policy on it? If enough people do it, it will. That's the point of protest. One person doing it, fair enough. Might get a couple of hashtags or a mention on local news if you're living in a tent somewhere. Get a few people doing it, however, then you're onto something.m8son wrote:If you want to stop this fine why not start a petition, go on a protest, occupy somewhere or whatever people do. Just saying."All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
I'm pretty evil as it goes, so that suits me.
Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
Cause I have read about quite a few people just straight up ignoring the forms and visits for years with no fines so I just wanted to see if there is any weight behind this.m8son wrote: Whether or not you agree with it if you don't register the government can fine you so why not just register
Like I said earlia I threw the forms away as I recieved them and the canvasser visited at a bad time. If I get anothet visit at an appropriate time then I'll probably just fill it out, just got no interest and can't be arsed with something that doesn't concern me. I didn't know you could be fined for not registering which still sounds ridiculous to me.

Do the forms have your name on? If not, then they don't know it's YOU that hasn't registered. They can't make you do something when they don't know who's there, that's the whole point of registering to vote because they use that to analyse where you are. Doesn't get in the way of anything else either mind.Hibbie wrote:Cause I have read about quite a few people just straight up ignoring the forms and visits for years with no fines so I just wanted to see if there is any weight behind this.m8son wrote: Whether or not you agree with it if you don't register the government can fine you so why not just register

I'm just going to fill it out if they get in touch again.

It's to the address so at least one legal council tax payer has to be listed on it or a landlord has to fill it in. Take a risk, don't pay, then then play dumb like all the non-english speaking migrants do.

Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
It's not just to vote. Electoral role is used for Jury duty and it also helps prevent fraud. Just because you send off a form with your name on doesn't mean you have to vote.

Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
Yeah but as said before some people don't want listing.
I'd be surprised if the forms were directly addressed to the name of the people because the whole point is to get your name as they don't know it...

Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
your name is usually already on the form... the idea is to notify them of changes. There is also a box which says 'if you do not want to appear on the edited register, please tick here'

Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
which is whjy all these knobs who didnt vote are partially responsible for the bunch of evil pricks we have in government at the moment.wub wrote:Just saying."All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
one thing that grinds my gears is when people give it this "derp derp fuck voting theyre all exactly the same anyway it wont make a difference." yeah so what did u do about it mate? protest? organise occupy movements? nah mate u sat and watched xfactor and had a curry. whats the point in not voting out of principal if everyones just gonna be so passive and apathetic. u might as well just vote for someone who wont privitise our health services, destroy our benefit system, give us ridiculous additiona taxes etc
personally i'd like a nice peaceful revolution and massive reformation of the whole system, iceland style, but i dont think that's going to happen. im too much of a little plop to go out there and make it happen, so ill vote for the lesser of two evils, cos at least theres a chance at making a difference the legit way
i hope everyone else who doesnt register vote does get fined. to plop with the principal of it

Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
That tells you that the election system is flawed then does it not?bennyfroobs wrote:which is whjy all these knobs who didnt vote are partially responsible for the bunch of evil pricks we have in government at the moment.
Use mass wealth to start a campaign 2 years ahead of the General Election using lies and skewed statistics through your payed-up media outlet to undermine the opposition, make a bunch of false promises that will get you the vote from the uneducated at the ballot box, with only a few options on the slip, then reverse everything in the space of 5 years and start again.
The Lib Dems got to choose to put the Tories in charge because people were sick of political pass-the-parcel. Of the 35% who didn't vote in 2010, I can bet most were exLabour supporters who seen little difference between them and the Tories at the time.
If there was a 'none of the above', 'all these knobs who didn't vote' would turn up and tick that, then you would get a real sense of opinion for UK politics, instead parties get in power via a protest vote.

Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
"wah wah wah they're cheating at the game )))':". yeah man it's painfully obviously that the system is flawed but i don't see how a protest vote for a party of evil fat cats is going to help. 35% is a huge amount of the population, if those people actually got off their arses and did something (take iceland for an example) then things could easily change.
but just sitting there and thinking "yep. im not gonna vote. thatll teach them. now if everyone else thinks the same way i do, and no one votes, they will really be screwed lol!!". if that happens no one's going to be screwed, except us. mass apathy isnt the way forwards.
and lib dems probs chose to put the tories in charge because their rich families are friends with the tories rich families. those goobers don't give one front bum fart what the people of the uk are sick of.

Re: £1000 fine for not registering to vote
Why would you not want to vote anyway? This reminds me of that Russell Brand on Newsnight nonsense. Not voting sends out zero message. Actually, it sends out a message that says "carry on doing what you are doing cos we don't give a rats". So it has the opposite of the desired effect.
I don't think people should be forced to vote because I respect people's wish to live a private seclusive life if that's what they choose. However, not voting because you think you are making some kind of political point is some wishy-washy hippy bullcrap.
