How many Hz is typical?
out of pure curiosity, how low is the bass consistently in dubstep? In one of the clips ive seen mala talks about having its own frequency, aside from house, dnb etc. is that the case or is it that dubstep allows the bassline more prominence, so it seems deeper/truer?
the human hearing range is generally between 20hz and 20khz, anything below 20hz you cant hear, i think you can just feel
generally its quite rare to find tracks that have bass consistently below 30hz, but has anyone ever analysed the sound and see how low it typically goes?

my god, your cassette avatar is mesmerizing.
i think you could determine this by using the spectrum analyzer in audacity (free) or something like soundtrack pro. i'm still learning how to read the graphs though. a track like goat stare with very clean, swooping bass and little else would be good for this.

this looks like just the tool for the job. i think it's new...

You need to ask Kode9...he studies bass like a science.

I am not sure about this . -edited.Thomas wrote:So that track reaches about 26HZ
please ezcuse my ignorance, but what does this mean. If your speakers/headphones dont play this range they will distort?
However vinyl can only carry frequencies down to a certain level.
quote]How low of a frequency can LPs produce?
Source:
* The common wisdom is that they don't have much below 60hz, but there is evidence that the signal extends as low as 20hz and possibly lower on some LPs.
* Note that low bass on vinyl records will be mono, but this is not a problem because low bass is non-directional. (The reason for this is that low bass signals cause the largest groove excursions, and of course the vertical (out of phase) component of the groove must never be so great that the groove rises above the surface of the record, so the out of phase component of the low bass is removed when mastering for vinyl).

I looked at quite a few tracks with a spectrum analyser,
think it was this one:
http://www.sumuller.de/audiotester/
free for a month or so.
You can set the x-axis to 20Hz to 200 or something..
Most tracks seemed to have a wide band from about 40 Hz to 60 Hz,
peaking at 50 Hz.
Kingstown is definitely worth a look though!

interesting. i take it bengas not the only one who has bass that low and thats common for dubstep producers?Deapoh wrote:Bengas tunes go down to 20hz. Anything lower and it can rattle your lungs so much that they bleed and you choke to death! - Thats coming from Jason Transition.
i heard that bass at certain extremely low frequencies can make you lose bowel control. apparently the us military is looking into it to incapacitate crowds.
my speakers go down to 49hz and when i play ancient memories my windows shake violently. i need a sub.
