Can anyone still get away with playing deep tunes in a club?

Post by shankstep » Thu Dec 30, 2010 11:52 am

I'm wanting to kick start my DJ'ing, the dilemma have is this:

Can I play records by people like F, Mala, Headhunter, Orson, without having the dancefloor die?

Mind that I'm DJ'ing around Manchester and not London where I imagine this style has been popularized to some extent.

to be honest it depends how you mix them...im always improving and as my ease of dropping anything increases the easier it is to get those tunes in at the right times...

left leg out can always go off for example if you stick it over something it works with...

also dont think everyone vacating the dancefloor is a failure.....i like to listen to djs rather than necessarily always brock out

if youre local to croydon come and check me next weds as well dj2e as hes amazing with the deeper stuff

shiverz and curse are going b2b as well and they will drop in the odd deeper tune

good luck with it mate anyway

Is definitely all about timing.
I've seen proper jump up DJs drop things like Alicia and Broken Heart Rmx in between two bangers but you will get walkers if you don't bring the energy back up quickly enough.

All depends on the club/type of night it is. If its quite a commercial club booking the like of Doctor P etc then no you really wouldnt get away with the deeper stuff for a whole set. But if the night has a club with an amazing system booking the like of Tunnidge (who is playing Manc in the new year sometime) then i'm pretty sure you could.

Like the other have said you should drop the more miminal stuff here and there and if its getting a good reaction then continue with it. Obviously if youre losing the vast majority of the dance floor switch it up tho.

I think you can get away with it myself. A nice deep track breaks the tension but for me in a hyped club if you do a deep set its not gonna go down very well but thats all about working out who your gonna play to! You can clear a dancefloor with the biggest of tracks if you mess the mixing up! ;)

if every dj just played the same safety set of 'jump up' the world would be a very boring place. i say break the mould, it does matter how you mix them etc, but dont give in!! last set i did i dropped alot of 'deep' stuff, although i still think these tracks have their own energy and are still more than danceable to.
people came to request borgore, but i just ignore them!

i am not a selfish dj, i just think that you should play what you want to play, adapt to the crowd to a degree, but turn up wanting to showcase what you're about.

there is a huge ignorance in dubstep at the moment, and its only people that draw for 'deep' etc that will change it

Like they said: timing.

Deep tunes are a good way to end a set, or during the middle--give the mix a resting point, a place to breathe, before you ramp it back up. High energy tunes non-stop for an hour tire me out mentally. I have walked out on nights after two hours because I just got bored with the noise. A good DJ can take the audience on a journey. You should start out with impact, grab their attention, the move into tunes that set the vibe for the night, lots of rhythm, then once everyones hammered drunk and its the point where nobody really cares what you’re playing because "everything sounds good toward the end of the night” drop what you want.

definitely but you can create energy from your love for steppy or deep tunes with how you mix them in...expose what you love about them in a more obvious fashion

for example your tune saviour went off last night as i had it coming in and out for ages until i dropped it over to the massive weighty bit that comes in and it got people hype...its not a hype tune as such but it worked

play what you like and not what you think people will like. Even if the room empties, you've just got to listen to your favorite tunes really fucking loud in a club :)

I agree it's about timing but also depends on the crowd. If they are a bunch of students expecting jump-up, they're probably not going to appreciate it.

Is "getting away with it" not a bit of a bad mentality?

Just be headstrong and believe in the sound you're pushing.

And remember, just because people aren't smashing the dancefloor doesn't mean they aren't listening.

If you clear enough dancefloors though you're not going to get booked.....no matter how tight your mixing is.

What the majority has said.

Play for ya self, push the sound you want to push and enjoy it. Even if you do clear the dancefloor a bit. Peeps can only stand outside smoking for so long

but do you really wanna get booked playing crap you dont like??

(i'm not saying you do personally)

like Be-1ne said - its class getting to hear tunes you like on a big system,if you dont you can't expect anyone else to.

Most deep tunes go in hard. People will respond to bassweight. Especially if they're never been lucky enough to hear some deep, heavy sub on a proper system. I'd say go for it and see what happens. :D

(If you can get hold of a copy of Holograms by Reso, thats the one for some seriously hefty business! :) )
