How does this laptop look?

Post by Xephex » Mon Jun 13, 2011 11:21 pm

Wel'p my desktop imploded and i lost everything, it's quite heart-breaking :(

So i'm gonna go ahead and get a laptop and this is the one i've been looking at, keep in mind i have a low budget right now, i'll get a much better system in the future but i need something at least decent to get me by for now.

Dell inspiron 14r 2nd gen

2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i5-2410M processor 2.30 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 2.90 GHz

4GB Single Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz

500GB SATA hard drive (7200RPM)

It's only $650 which from what other products i've compared it to, is a nice price for those specs.

So any input if that'll get me a decent performance when producing? Thanks guys

like shit...its a dell.

dell uses the absolute cheapest shit parts to build their computers. i hate dell, in my experience anyway.

i think ud be better off getting like an ASUS even than a dell...but the specs should be ok depending on how many vst's you plan on using at once etc..

Depends what colour you chose. I would recommend the purple, even though it might seem gay now, the chicks seem to dig guys who can swing either way. So really, by being a spot homosexual you could potentially get more tail than the rest of us.

The only time I use Dell is for my works laptops - even with them being work machines, and being used safely behind a corporate firewall, no file sharing, no porn sites etc etc, I still have at least one member of my team have a laptop die on them on average every 4 months.

Build quality is shocking; mine wouldn't power up properly yesterday, and Task Manager was reporting a 100% permanant spike on both CPU trackers. The solution? I turned the thing upside down and shook it. Like a fucking Etch-A-Sketch for fucks sake.

Steer well clear of Dell unless you want something for a younger sibling or elderly relative to use solely for communicating with the outside world.

How does this laptop look?
well, considering it's a dell, it would probably look real ugly.
...in my opinion

I bought a high spec (Dell studio) laptop with dell about 3 years ago and its still running perfectly, cant fault it one bit.
On the other hand my sister bought a low/mid range laptop (Dell inspiron) and it was the worst piece of shit ive seen in my life, it fell apart completely after about 6 months.

So if your buying a laptop you might as well spend a little extra and invest in something that will last

i've got a dell m1330, had it for about 3 years and its still running well. its caused me enough hassle over that time tho, had to change the motherboard 4 times due to dell not putting enough heat sinks so the gpu just melts. i can't really use it as a laptop anymore, has to used on my laptop stand which has a built in fan, and the battery life is absolutely appalling, under an hour! despite all that, it still runs quite well for a 3 year old laptop although i think i'm gonna look for a new one around xmas time

Nobody seems to rate Dell but I poured a whole cup of tea over my Inspiron 6400 aaaages ago and its still working fine today.
Had it for about 8 years now! Maybe the old ones were built better, I dunno.

i don't know why everyones bashing dell, i've had a few over the years and recommended them to family and friends. never had any problems!

the laptop looks good, latest generation sandy bridge cpu. only thing i'd say is that a 14 inch screen may be a little small, but this is down to personal preference. i use a 15, not much in it, but i find mine a bit small when i use cubase and have lots of windows to arrange.

this is bad information, where did you hear they use the cheapest parts? my laptops about 3 years old and going strong. has a western digital hard drive, intel cpu, nvidia graphics card. these are all branded parts and well known. the only bad thing i can say about dell is that they are hard to upgrade due to using different fittings on some of their parts. this is irrelevant to laptops as they're not usually upgradeable much anyhow.

i wrote some info a while ago that can help you get the best performance out of it:

was this a geforce 8400m? if so, the problem wasn't with dell, it was a problem with nvidia's manufacturing process. several lines of laptops had this problem, i was lucky as i have an 8600m which isn't attached to the motherboard. but in your case, its soldered on and the whole motherboard had to be replaced.

yea that was the problem. my last motherboard replacement (over a year ago) seems to have sorted the problem, but it still runs shit hot if i don't run it on my stand which has a built in usb fan to cool things down

Just get the newest processor you can i5 is good and as much ddr3 RAM these are the important bits. Personally Im loving my acer got it about 7 months ago and it runs perfectly.dont bother with chain stores like PC world they just exist to sell overpriced outdated systems to mums and dads. Checking online stores for offers is probably the safest bet.

yeah its a shame about that. how much warranty have you got left? i think dell increased it by a year for this problem: http://en.community.dell.com/dell-blogs ... 1#comments

dell also released a bios update which keeps the fans on longer. this will help a bit but won't fix the cause, only treat the symptom. it'll probably already be on yours as you've had the motherboard replaced, but might be worth checking.

note - if you have a bit of warranty left, it might be worth NOT installing the update, with the hope that the motherboard will fail before the warranty is up! in that case, let it run as hot as possible then get them to give you another one! :)

its digusting what happened with this problem. rather than just recalling all the chips, nvidia just left it to the resellers(i.e dell, hp, acer, etc) to sort out with the customer. really dell should have just given you a different graphics card that doesn't have the same problem. is it the same graphics they've replaced it with? if so it'll probably fail again. from what i've read if your warrantys up dell don't want to know, and after reading the latest on this i won't be recommending dell anymore!

If you're totally out of warranty you could try rightmark cpu clock utility and undervolt the laptop. Gave a 10°C reduction in my laptop, might help a bit.

i got the laptop as soon as it came out cos my dad ordered one but it wasn't the same spec as the one my add ordered so they sent him a new one and forgot to take the old one back, so can't really complain too much as i got it for free. the warranty ran out last year sometime and i can't really be bothered to do the cpu clocking stuff as i only use it when i'm at my desk anyway. will definately be looking to get a new one around xmas time tho

I'm on a budget too and found this one last night: http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/rts_ ... UA%2523ABA

Seems pretty decent for a $550 laptop. But I could be wrong.

I was gonna get the Acer AS5742-6475 15.6-Inch Laptop, but for 50 bucks more you can get the bigger screen and slightly better specs on the HP.

Then again I've only had HPs so figured I'd go with a brand I trust.

i have a dell inspiron 1525 and its been 100% fine over the last 3 years.

for the people saying about the motherboard overheating its most likely because you need to open it up and clean the dust out of the fan.
