Computer Repair Options

Post by rockonin » Tue Jan 08, 2013 2:37 pm

Hey guys my computer failed in December due to the motherboard dying. I took it to the PC World Knowhow (UK)for it to be repaired. I just got a phone call today saying that they have replaced the motherboard and i should get it back hopefully by this week. I've been without my production computer for over three weeks and its been hell.

Just wondering what you guys normally do when your computers breakdown, go to independent repair shops, fix it yourself?

Never had anything happen and hopefully it won't for awhile. Doing things yourself is almost always cheaper just read up on it before you go wrecking your own stuff.

I attempted to fix my laptop myself once, about 20 minutes after a fap. The resulting static in my hands blew the motherboard. Now I just cry to my friend who builds pc's for fun.

It cost £50 for them just to diagnose it. Replacing the motherboard is going to cost me £268 which is daylight robbery. The computer is a Packard bell IPower x8640 which i bought FIVE years ago. They're doing final checks today, hopefully there's nothing more wrong with it. Lesson learnt from this, never clean the inside of your tower with a vacuum machine lol

Good lord. Assuming the x8640 has the specs shown here, then replacement motherboard should be a P5N-E SLI, which on eBay will cost you;

eBay link

Unless I'm missing something here, that £268 seems a tiny bit high :|

Once you get a new computer start collecting small amounts of money here or there for a new one if it breaks. If it lasts for like 2 years you'll have a good chunk of change to work with.

If you buy from Pc World or Currys, take out their Whatever Happens care plan. Anything goes wrong with it pop it in and if they can't fix it within 2 weeks you get money to replace it ( Like for Like )
Any feedback on my songs will be returned

A word of note never get repairs from pc world/currys. Finally got my pc back from repair yesterday after over a month and the second graphics card (2x nvidia gefore 96000 gs cards in sli) is not recognised by my computer. I installed all the latest drivers, i tried all the control panel extend to desktop stuff but nothing worked. Had to to take it back again today for them to sort it out! Nooooooooo!

I take it to a repair center and let them find the problem (free of charge), as they obviously have extra psu's etc..
Then I buy the part I need and replace it myself.

I don't open up a psu or shit like that though. Just replacing parts, maybe fix wiring.

After three months of messing me about just to change the motherboard i got my PC back from KNOWHOW. To compensate me they nicely added two brand new Nvidia GT 640 graphics card in SlI mode! Damn Right, Result!
