Studio Monitor Decision? M-Audio Bx5 D2?

Post by Laze » Fri Jan 09, 2015 3:11 am

Hey dubstepforum, first time poster here, and I figured it would be better to ask this question here rather than some place since we all are pretty much working with some kind of bass music

But anyways, I've been making music for a while now with no studio monitors, just some really cheap $40 insignia desktop speakers from best buy (at least they came with a "sub" LOL), and have been wondering whether to get a pair or hold off for a deal. (I have ATH-M50's so I'm not completely lost in my mix haha). Well I've recently seen that the M-Audio Bx5 D2's are really cheap, like $80 each, and they're usually $150 (since they are now being phased out by the new M-Audio Carbons)

So basically, should I get these monitors? Are they good? Do you have any experience with them? Or would it be worth it to just fork out the dough for a better pair? If you can pit these against another monitor that'd be great too

Even if you don't have these monitors, let me know how whichever ones you have are doin for ya :corndance:

To be honest, they are pretty shit. My dad bought some to use while he was editing vocals from business seminars to turn into tracks on CDs. He had them just about two years and one of them quit working. We opened it up and some of the parts had literally melted.

Also, the frequency response was fairly crap even for 5 inch monitors and they weren't even close to flat. I can't imagine they actually much better than your computer speakers.

Save your pennies and get a pair of Equator D5s for 399. You'll be glad you bought something better. Presonus Eris series is worth looking into as well.

I've worked on quite a few kinds of "budget" and entry level monitors in various acquaintances studios--yamahas, mackies, KRK rokits...the Equator D5s blow them all out of the water for the price per quality--acceptable frequency response in the 5inch and 8inch versions and fantastically surgical monitors--really revealing mid frequency response, conservative and accurate low end, sparkling, airy highs that aren't harsh and don't cause fatigue.

you'll be hard pressed to find anything positive on m-audio products for anything other than their midi controllers. stuff is just sub par.
