balkan/gypsy/whatever
anyone into this particular kind of world music?
and i mean the actual traditional orchestras/groups/componists/...
not balkan beats.
i myself got into this music watching black cat, white cat,
digged into fanfare ciocarlia, who played here last summer, goran bregovic, who is probably my best discovery music wise in years, emir kusturica & the no smoking orchestra, who combine traditional sounds with western and english influences to make gypsy punk instead of traditional balkan music, ...

i'm gonna recommend you some stuff...
first of all you must find "Sar e roma" - great gypsy band which is collaborating with lots of musicians from former yugoslavia...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hd1SsUBYSQ
Bregović and Kusturica I dislike 'cause of their nationalist politics...they had a gig in portugal and made a mess with pro Milosevic and Seselj slogans and i find that revolting...
then try to find "Rambo Amadeus" - he's a montenegrian jazz artist who has lots of ethno influences, great music...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgIIcPSh ... re=related
then Vlatko Stefanovski and his band "Leb i sol" - huge macedonian influence and lots of offbeat stuff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2mt_hSdWd0
then lots of serbian horne playaz...sick stuff...
http://www.trubaci.net/
then a hip hop and jungle MC Sky Wikluh with his side project that has a lot of ethno influence combined with Frank Zappa frenzy
http://www.multimediarec.co.yu/release.php?relID=12469
that's for starters...

i didn't say they are the same, i'm categorising them together because obviously they are related.esoundc wrote: come on , lets face it, Balkan Music is not Gypsy Music, i dunno why everybody are hyping on a Myth created by Goran Bregovich.
however, i heard fanfare ciocarlia for example aren't gypsies either, but get categorised as, since gypsy music became popular over the years
but i understand what you mean,
the dumbest thing i've heard so far was the question, if i'm getting into this music because i'm a born latino and try to discover my roots or traditions or whatever.
and when there's salsa or flamenco or anything like it on everyone looks at me thinking it's in my traditions to be interested
fan of the music, just a Belgianstaas wrote: are you from the balkans too, or just a fan of the music?

the thing is that the Balkan Music is really releated to tribal histroy. Fact is that the Gypsys from Panjabia have been removed on Balkans from Turkish Otoman Empire after the Bulgarian Kingdom was under a slavery that hold up like 500 years. It is like that.
Bad thing is that lately this MYTH is destroyng a folklor of a tribe, which holds the first existable writing long before the Ancient India people invented their alphabet.

everybody has he's choice i guess, but thats does not change the history.bibishte wrote:Gogol Bordello, JUF, Balkan Beat Box, Kultur Shock, Juke Baritone

ciocarlia are definitely gypsies, find a picture
for your information, the music they play is not traditional it was started by the ottoman army(inspired by western brass bands)
it is quite an old style, but it goes back about 200 years ,but the traditional folklore is much older, also the bands today don't play it the way the ottomans did, some play extremely fast some have cuban influence even
you should try this album, not completely traditional as some western instruments(violin, trumpet, accordion) are on it and some gypsi and turks with their own styles, but since the recordings are from the 20s and 30s there isn't as much outside influences as all the bands today operating(who all like jazz, rock etc and incorporate it)

i'm really tolerant and do not have nacionalistic problems, but there are few points and some socio - political discourses of an existible situation that make me want the World to Unferstand that Balkan music is not Gypsy music....
i have nothing against no one, but yes i still live here and feel that the EU policy on tollerance on minority of tribes that happens to be majority/ acording to - birth balance of my tribe and a lot of young peolple leave out my homeland/. So in next years might be no more Mistrery of Bulgarian voices, and yes the big media people like Goran Bregovic are really helping it u know, with creating myths, so now what all the world shall think that Gypsy music is Balkan music, no it is not, Balkans are not India.
i can write really a big isue + alot of picture material

gypsies are very good musicians so I don't understand what's the problem.
popular (folklore) music in Balkans (Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and so on) is not gypsy music but it's closer to it (the instruments, the tempo and so on) than to irish music, american country music or chinese music, etc. so it's no big deal to confuse them.
I don't like this kind of music because it does not address to the intellectuals/young ppl, but rather to old people or to the people from the rural environment (peasants) with no college, big hopes, dreams and aspirations. its message is childish, it usually speaks about a shepherd who misses his ladyfriend, the musical theme is repeated over and over again and apparently the only human beings who are able to dance on it are my grandparents.
this kind of music will always be light and easy-going, aiming to be a "politically correct - let's not talk about anything relevant - let's not disturb anyone OR make them think too hard" type of music, just like any other folklore/popular music (from any corner of this world)
this kind of music will never have a deep, meditative or hardcore, drinking, let's do drugs and skank side, things that our generation expects from musicians. we are living in free times, there are no more communist/fascist regimes around to censor music and don't we just love progress/evolution when it comes to music?
the discussion can go and on.
