yeah so im looking for a way to stop all my samples opening up in itunes when i double click them, cause then they stay in there and play back randomly when my itunes is on shuffle and stuff.
i know i can select each file, choose open with and then specify a program to always open the file with, but is there not an easier way to do it than this?
i dont really want to go through every sample i have and set it up in this way, it would take ages!
i use a mac, does anyone know if for instance i can somehow make it so every file in a certain folder opens with a certain application?
cheers guys!

Not sure exactly on a Mac, but on the PC you can right click to bring up an options menu and then select "open with".... There is a little tick box that allows you to set the program you decide to open the file with as the default program for that filke extension type.
Try going into iTunes and in the preferences, see if you can select which file types it automatically opens. If it gives you the option, unselect Wav's and Aiff's....
Let us know if you find the solution!

Find the samples in your library and uncheck them on the far left, so they won't play in shuffle mode.

select a mp3 file, open the info window, select the tab saying "open with" (or something like that I run a swedish OSX) and you should be allright from there.

to reiterate above...Right click/ctrl click on an mp3..click 'get info'...go to 'open with' then select a program you want mp3's to open with...then click 'change all'...to make this the default for all.
from now on all mp3's will open with what ever program you choose (i.e quicktime)

You could do what these guys said, or you could buy a 51% share of apple and hire some decent programmers to make an iTunes that doesn't try and take over your life, your cpu and your missus...

I use AudioFinder for all my samples, it's great for previewing and also keeping out of the way of my iTunes music.

Costs $70 but is definitely worth it, couldn't do without it!

I like iTunes a lot, but poor thing is a CPU hog to be honest.
And I can't shut it down with the provided EXIT functions, I always end up using the task manager to shut it down, some buggy thing.

on a mac in tiger or leopard, quicktime has been embedded into itunes. so while the itunes programming may be running as the shell, quicktime plug ins are doing all the conversions in the program.
open quicktime...
with it open, go to the quicktime player menu and choose "Quicktime preferences" (not preferences, make sure you choose "quicktime prefs")
then click advanced, then at the bottom of advanced is a box called "mime settings"
in the mime list, go to mp3, wav, or whatever filetype you samples are in, and uncheck the box.

I agree. I hate fucking itunes. I try to drag tunes straight from a folder to my ipod and it doesn't take it. So I HAVE TO send it to itunes just to sync it with my ipod.

If you just want to preview samples (audio files in general) you can just do it in finder - just change the finder window view and you get a quicktime player...
