More on the Jamaica Dubstep topic

Postby dov » Sat Feb 14, 2009 1:10 am

I just had a really funny but fun telephone conversation.
While hunting down the rights to use a vocal performance by a Jamaican artist on my label, I found him online and he gave me his phone number as he's not super web savy.

The artist was asking more about the music we make and was more confused by the fact we had 'electro' as one of the genres on our Myspace, but as soon as I said 'Dubstep' he was ....
"alright mon, I n I was da first dubsteppa...."

and on into a rant about being done with certain scenes, how he rocked MTV way back when and got set up on a label with Sean Paul etc

I still had the feeling at the end of the conversation that he had no idea what Dubstep was but it's nice to know I spoke to ' da first dubsteppa' :D

yeah probably not. "dub" (obvious) and "stepper" (as in steppers beat) are part of the Jamaican vocabulary but mean entirely different things.

If only you could've recorded his conversation "The First Dubsteppa" would be a great sample.

Verbally it's OK so far, but still sorting out details.

He liked the track I sent him, which was actually a midtempo tune, it seemed micro-genre names were too much to make part of the conversation without getting too sidetracked and making the whole thing more confusing than it needed to be.

Hopefully it all works out and then I work a connection for regular vox for tracks :)

In hindsight yes, although it was a crappy cell connection we had to call each other back a few times :?

And obviously the song has to be called "Da First Dubsteppa".

Update on this one, the release got licensed and it all went through as planned.
Two mixes with the licensed vocal in the release they ended up not being 100% dubstep so I posted it in the Hip Hop / Wonky section: http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=100625&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=
samples can be previewed here: [url]http://www.addictech.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=30251

yep that be him :) and yes he was in early on a lot of the dancehall sounds that became big in the nineties, so in a sense.. an original dubsteppa.
Really down to earth guy, I'm stoked it worked out, just caught up with him last week before this dropped and we may be working together more in the future too
