I'm rarely interested in posting my thoughts, but this needs to be said.

Paid my £15 tonight to see Coki. I was there purely for the music. When the dancers came on, everyone seemed to find it a bit funny and out of place; This was Dubstep right? An underground music scene that is strictly about the music. The flow doesn't really fit gyrating and techno hands. Then the strippers came on. Not only was this a f#@king joke in itself, but to also choose to place them on the set of someone who in my eyes represents the pure end of the scene was ridiculous. Especially when the same night featured Mary Anne Hobbs; the commercial end of the scene. SP and Coki were both noticeably distracted, and Coki, although my favourite producer, is not the best of DJs normally anyway. The atmosphere was terrible and felt flat. The girls i were with were disgusted, everyone else i talked to about it during the night were not in to it at all.

At least Hatcha represented.

I didn't pay to see a f#@king strip show.

Opinions please, other than from those males who feel the need to reinforce their masculinity by verbalising that it was great.

I was gonna go but couldnt find the money and had alot of work to do.

This makes me feel a bit better about it! Would have still liked to hear tes la rok smash it though!

Right, we knew this would be a controversial thing to do and I can kind of understand your frustrations but we at Penguin Dance are people that like a good time and to try something different. They definitely divided people's opinions and whether or not you liked it, we tried something a bit different to see what would happen.

One thing though- club nights are not just about the music. That is probably the main reason that people go to nights such as ours but a lot of people go to have a good time and are not as into the music as everyone on forums. We try to create an experience that is memorable through BMX demos, magicians, graffiti etc and in this case, strippers. I'm sorry this upset you so much.

Definitely a poor idea - the girls were very pretty etc and seemed to be having fun, but it detracted from the music and polarised the crowd into a group of people who stood there leering instead of dancing and then a group of other people who were basically pissed off and trying to ignore it. So basically nobody seemed very keen on dancing. I thought it was a couple of girls who were wasted and doing it for a laugh, didn't realise you actually paid them to do it.

Do i really need to defend myself by stating i love girls? I spose i've just got more respect for women and am not really in to exploitation. It detracted from the music.

Doing something different is to be commended. That's fair to have other stuff going on like BMX and graffiti, but people have the option to get involved. People were subjected to this whether they liked it or not, bit like dining at Hotel du Van and being forced to drink a bottle of White Lightning with your Duck Confit.

To pick this event in particular, one that would be drawing a larger female percentage due to Mary Anne Hobbs, seems a bigger mistake. I imagine there would have been girls there wanting to support someone who is doing as good as the boys in a male dominated scene, so for them all to then be presented with women in that way on the same night is something that's ill thought out.

Perhaps the portion of your audience that are the pure music lovers that you may have driven away, will be replaced by people that want entertainment other than music. You don't need to dress Dubstep up. Do you think it got where it is over the last 4 years or so by any other means than being good music? But if that's your market and you want to be the American Football of Dubstep that's up to you.

Fair enough but as koast said, there certainly was no exploitation as they got paid and wanted to do it. (they would have made much more in a strip club)

We were trying something new and maybe it didn't work. I don't think we would get them again but you gotta try because if we didn't, we wouldn't know what works.

We're not trying to dress up dubstep, far from it. The music speaks for itself but in a VERY competitive market where fashion dictates a lot, you have to offer punters more for their money and create something that is different to other nights because if you don't, the crowd will go to whatever is fashionable/popular.

Sorry if we gave you a third rate drink to accompany your 4* meal but we will continue to surprise people at our nights.

We won't have tits again.

Hello everyone,

I'm the other promoter of Penguin Dance. I've been watching this forum for a while but only just got round to signing up. Regarding the strippers I think Spree has said it all really but felt like I should make a contribution too.

It was a great night on Saturday so thanks to everyone who made it down. We knew it was a bit of a risk getting strippers but sometimes you have to take risks in order to succeed. I was actually quite shocked at how far they went as we only asked them to get their boobs out and dance for a bit. I know that there was a big split in the crowd and we were bound to have a bit of a backlash but it was only a bit of fun.

We like our events to be different and we pay attention to every detail. We didn't want the strippers to take anything away from the music, we were hoping it would add to the overall experience. The girls were safe and they enjoyed themselves, the DJs and MCs enjoyed the show and half of the crowd enjoyed it. I respect the opinions of those who didn't feel the same way but you can't please everyone and we didn't mean to upset anyone.

As Spree said, It was a one off and I don't think we'll be having strippers down again. There will be other surprises though so watch this space!
