I ended up not getting that mixer (Paypal is some bullshit), and got this instead:

also, while on google image search, i ran into this A&H rotary mixer that looks pretty sexy (probably doesnt sound as good as the urei tho)



ALSO, for those interested in the urei 1620, know that the soundcraft reissue is different than the original (at least in value.) if you stumble across an original 1620, buy it, cause it will keep its value (oh, and any house DJ ever will be on your nuts to buy it off of you.)

Seems the A&H V6 is really good, arguably better than the Urei, you can have a tube pre-amp on every channel which is pretty sweet.

i had a residency where i was forced to use one of the Rane rotary mixers with the added crossfader & eq.

it completely changed the way I mixed records, i dont even touch crossfaders anymore.

it took some getting used to, but if i had the funds to buy one I would in a heart beat. the sweep on the channel volumes/eqs is so much smoother then any other mixer i've ever used.

definitely not for quick mixes (although it is possible and not that hard really as long as you are familiar with it).

Ecler mixers are analog and fucking amazing

I've played on rotaries a handful of times. Definitely mildly frustrating at first.
I like the exponential response of knobs over the linear response of faders though, same with synthesizers
when you fade something in with a knob it sounds completely different

this is the rolls royce.



once you've played with this you'll never want anything else. Sound quality is just incredible and its a joy to mix on. costs about 2 grand.

Having said that if you play with serrato and mix in a rapid fire way the lack of a crossfader is probably going to slow you down.

just cause something has tubes doesnt mean that its good. in most DJ applications, id rather have transistors than tubes in my signal path unless theyre really transparent (guitar amps are a different story.) that being said, i'd still like to hear how this bad boy sounds.

really interesting thread, i've never used one of these. my only worry is that i couldn't cut or scratch with one, but with a standard mixer i can cut, scratch and do long EQed mixes no problem... is the sound difference really worth losing functionality? What is the main draw of these?

It's supposed to be a lot smoother, and the pots give you a bit more precise control over your tracks, as far as I know.

Ended up getting a midi controller for livesets, if you didn't see my post at the top of the page.

REALLY WANT THAT SHIT TO GET OFF BACKORDER, KTHX.

Used these a few times and they can be a ballache at first. Personally I find upfaders a lot easier to use but it cant be denied you get some smooth blends from the rotaries.

I wouldnt go with them personally as I play out fairly often and would rather keep improving on the typical set up if you get me?
