Samson Rubicons or KRK Rokits?

Postby amphibian » Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:27 am

Hey all!

Am getting to a point now where my "production" headphones are hitting their limits, especially on the reports I get back from others (I have a pair of HD25s). Have read a lot on the Samson Rubicons and the KRK Rokits, both of which I'm quite interested in - but I'm curious. The Rubicons are reported to have a far better clarity in their reproduction of the sound, allowing you to "see" further into the sound, but the KRK Rokits reportedly have better bass reproduction and so you'll get better use out of them in the mid-low ranges. If I were to get a woofer to support the Rubicons, would this be a better purchase or am I better off getting the KRKs?

Ive never been a fan of the Rubicons to be honest. They have always seemed to full on in the treble area for me. Adding a sub to your monitoring setup can be a major pain in the ass too.

The KRK's are very popular and have a decent sound, Ive always found them to be a long way off of flat though. Also they are butt ugly. However they are very popular so Im sure lots of peeps on here will disagree with me.

Whats your budget? I can recommend the Yamaha hs80's (£350 - £400 per pair). A nice flat sound with great bass response (havent bothered with my sub since I got em). I love em to bits!

It is always a good idea to listen to as many different models as you can to get a first hand idea of what you like or dont like.

Nah what your saying is pretty spot on. i love the Rubicons as they were clear and crisp as funk... but they lacked sub bass... The Krk's sound a but muffled and not as sharp with the midrange, but have better bass...

Still dont know what the popularity is with krk's to me they sound very generic like hifi speakers.

I'm afraid I have to totally disagree(with JFK). I think the Rubicons are lovely. It's true that they lack low end power but that's not really an issue as you are using these for *production* not listening and I don't really see any reason to have a sub :s by all means have a sub in your 'hi-fi' style set up you use for listening and you can play your track off that when it's finished or whatever but you don't need one in your monitoring set up.

The KRKs are used by loooaaaads of people but I have heard quite a lot of poor reviews of them whilst I haven't really heard anyone complain about the Rubicons, apart from the above poster lol

As has been said the samsons have a smooth and detailed high frequency response but the r6a models offer very little in the bass department.

You could go for the R8a's which go down to 40hz and are alot more balanced. Not much need for a sub to go with them mixing wise unless you prefer to feel your bass shake the room. In which case whatever you get , you will need a sub.

Yeah i had the R6s' I think the R8's will be spot on as they have the same tweeter, just larger cone and bass response.

The stereo imaging on the rubicons were amazing. It even suggests putting them on their side with the tweeters furthest away for a really nice wide stereo image. They sounded lovely with live recording and music production .

Think you may have hit the nail on the head there. Make sure the mix sounds ok on what the majority of people will be listening to it on etc.

hmm but what your saying there is that if you have hifi speakers, and it sounds phat on them, then it will on all hifi speakers. Which it dont. Hence you need to train your ears to your speakers and get them to accurately sound decent on all systems, even on mono portable radios.

it's a subjective thing the gen1 rp6s i use translated better for me than the other ones i demoed in the same price range at the time
if i had the choice as a first timer in same range i'd save a bit more go with the hs80s or adam a7s

the adam's have more detail and clarity, just to get bass range same as hs80s you need the sub do to woofer size
the a7s detail wise are sex

Awesome - thanks for all the input guys, exactly what I was after. I shall now weigh up my options and also do some reading on the hs80s and a7s. Thanks again!

Big up!
