Open your ears. Don't worry about music, listen to everything around you. Try to take the time to properly absorb the sounds you hear and just rest on them without the pressure of having to come up with any sort of coherent musical ideas.

Lady GaGa is actually an extremely talented singer/songwriter/musician, it's just the horrible production on her tracks that make them sound so godawful.
I would but I always mix as I go along :\ everytime I create a new element I give it a rough EQ on the spot and then as I bring more things in I adjust the levels/EQ/other processing along the way to make sure everything sits nicely from start to finish.
Should you cut more than you boost? Yeah. Is it an unforgiveable sin to boost like some people make out it is? No. Just do what feels right yadda yadda yadda, practice makes perfect.
