Innit dubway.

I think it's a serious, serious mistake to rely just on the attention received from forum heads.

There are still not nearly enough regular posters here to sell out a pressing, and I'm not sure there ever will be.

You need attention from the major players in the scene. Even if you can't, or decide not to release tracks from big names, you at least need the big name DJs on your side - people who will play your beats on pirate radio, to hype up the release in shops, people to play the stuff in raves. Anything to get the release a little attention outside of internet circles, which really represents only a small corner of the scene.

dubway wrote:there is one very positive thing about PI -> unknown artist will have more attention, ppl will siriously listen and debate about their tunes - which is nothing but good.
and not only unknown artists, but every tune will have some sirious public reaction and discussion..

that's why i think it's very healthy and i say BIG UP

+ my advice: all profit should be re-invested in next releases, development etc.

good luck!

i have made a point of saying that any profit gained thru my releases is goin straight back into the label!
at the end of the day i want this to do well and people enjoy the music-im not money orientated in the slightest

imo if i put money off my record back into the label im creating more of a chance that the next ''luke envoy '' maybe discovered

plus its a gesture that stands for the label! non profit-jst pure vibez

I'm not sure what the numbers are from other labels in this market, yet... but I am willing to bet that this forum doesn't even represent 5% of the dubstep market. I know a lot of people that buy dubstep tunes that do not post here for one reason or another.

This place is a great tool, and this forum is where this idea sprung up. We will never forget that, but we also cannot forget that we are a very small fraction of a niche market. That being said, it's not every day that you can POLL 5% of the worldwide audience for a genre. This is unique, and can be HUGE if we plan and execute properly.

Thing is, you're not even doing that. Over 1000 members, but there are only (roughly) 100 people with over a 100 posts. I reckon at most, in a poll, you'd get 50 or 60 votes. On any forum, you'll get a far more lurkers than you'll get actual posters.

Just because it's a record label based on a forum, that doesn't make you enormously different from any other record label - there's just more people involved. If anything you're currently at a disadvantage, as on this forum, we don't really have any major connections to artists or the scene.

I don't want to sound negative at all, but I really think treating this as being radically different from other record labels is a mistake.

and most dubstep/grime producers post on here

plus there are links to myspaces etc-

To promote their own stuff, most of the time :)

Being about unsigned music is awesome, but it's all about promoting that music.

ok behind the scenes all the promotion work is going on and i cant stress enough how little work is shown on the froum its self.

im gunna have a word with cede and see if he can get you a temp password for the hosting site and then you can see that everything is actually very proffessional and in hand

its cool i do understand that you wanna outlay the dangers and things and open our eyes and ting and i respect you for that as much as some people may think that ur just ranting.

i personally think you have good points!

but if everything went smoothly with no-self discovery for the label that would take the fun out of it lol :D

Yeah man, Victoria Road.

Keep 1st June free man, we're packing out Oceans 11 (close to where you live I think?) with extra system and throwing down some dubstep till 4am :) Got Distinction down, and Rusko's gonna play out all the heftiest forthcoming Dub Police bits too. Gonna be sick :D We'll be posting in the events section as soon as we have flyers printed. This is all short notice so we need to get as many heads down as possible ;)

None taken but I'm not convinced that this venue and the relationships built within cannot show benefit when promoting releases.

If this were a forum of dental hygenists then I would agree with you but the fact that it is a group of people passionate about the music from locations around the globe does provide an promotional advantage.

I actually spoke with a couple of tech/culture journalist friends and they thought a label spawned from an online community was fairly unique and newsworthy.

i haven't read through the whole thread (at work), but in reference to the question of "to middleman or not to middleman", i did wanna throw in that i have been dealing direct with shops (selling backstock for one the labels i am on) and they seem to be MORE than excited to cut out the distro and deal with me.

they get records cheaper, have more choices in how many they buy, and the money goes DIRECT to the label.

everybody wins (well, perhaps not the distros)...
