I've got a load of drum samples i fancy using. I opened up the Drag n Drog preset inside Ultrabeat to create my own kit, but it wont let me use any of the samples as they're 32bit.

What's the problem with 32Bit? Easy way round?

Not sure if this will work, but i often have problems using 8 bit samples (not in ultrabeat). i just open them in sountrack pro and export as 16 bit. works ok after that.

Is there a way to make the "byahhh" or "yooo" sound in a stock logic instrument? For example in Trolley snatchas song the future the whole song pretty much consists of the sound I'm talking about (it comes in at 27).

To get true panning and placement on any synth if logic you need to use sends.
With your chosen synth loaded create 2 busses, and put the send on them to full and set the track output to NO OUTPUT.
Now place a gain plug in on each bus and set it to MONO. Inside one of the gain plugs pan it all the way left, on the other all the way right.
You now have two faders( the bus strips) to control left and right side of the synth, this also allows you to add different delay/fx to each synth output, and you can also properly pan to tuck your sounds in the mix =)
What i tend to do id having set a synth up like this, bus the two buses to another, and then create a track region for it to automate in the arrange page. Hope this makes sense, you will hear a huge difference in width of your mixes though.

I need help with a couple of things that I would like to know. I am totally new to logic/music production in general, so I figured I would start by learning how to program the drums, as that is the foundation for a lot of music.

If I use the hyper editor or ultrabeat to program a drum beat, how do I get it it sustain notes, like kick drums? I have some really long sustaining samples of an 808, but it cuts it off and makes it sound wrong. Also, how would I get it to swing if I used the hyper editor gm drum set?

Also, how do I go about making kits from samples? I know how to make a sampler instrument, but not a drum kit.

And finally, how do I get sampled drum beats to match up with the rest of the song? I have used the bpm counter and then reset the beat count of the whole track, but it still doesn't make it match up with the bars sometimes.

Here's another, how would I get a sample to sustain longer? I made a really cool horn stab sample instrument, but I want it to sustain for a little longer. Do I have to manually alter the sample audio to make it longer?

Do you mean inside Ultrabeat using external samples? Open up Ultrabeat, and under the Ultrabeat kits there'll be a 'Drag n Drop' kit. This is an empty patch, and all you need to do is (funnily enough) drag and drop samples from your browser into the appropriate key places.

For hip-hop drum beats and such, how would you make them sound more natural and less quantized? Right now I am just drawing them in in the hyper-editor, and they sound way too rigid and mechanical. Am I just going to have to buy a drum pad deal and tap them in?

Ah, also, why won't it let me drag and drop drum samples from the bin? I'm trying to create an 808 kit and I'm using the bin to efficiently preview each of the like 200 samples I have, but it won't let me drag them in form there. Why?

Does anyone know how to set the size and zoom of the piano roll window so that when i press the shortcut the roll will pop up everytime in the correct place?

Sometimes it has a mind of its own, and i continually have to resize and adjust the window to see what i want when i open it.

Goggle and the Logic manual don't seem to mention parameters for the windows.

Do you mean zoom as in pressing Z short cut key? Because z is the key to zoom and fit the selected regions into the arrange window, hence why it seems to change randomly =)

pretty easy just move the drum hits slightly off so they dont sound like they are pefectly on time... i might be sounding like an ass here but its not rocket science..

To get a more natural feel it's all about moving the hits slighty, even about 10 ticks either side should help get more flow, obviously it would depend on the sort of groove your going for. To automatically add a bit of swing to your notes select all (cmd + a). Click the quantize menu and in that you will see options saying swing a etc, clikc on one of those and you should be on your way.

Cool. Thank you. I got some groove templates, so I've been messing with those a little, but I'll try moving them slightly off too.

Another thing haha. I have been making sample kits with the drag and drop in ultrabeat, but I have run into a problem. When I try to draw them in in the hyper editorm the GM Drum Kit settings don't match up to the right drums parts. How do I got about tagging the audio files so it knows which is a kick, snare, etc? I re-named them in UltraBeat, but I doubt that does anything.

When I hear something I want to sample on my itunes library I drag in into Logic and then cut it down to the part I want, works fine but it still has the whole tune copied over and hidden beyond the selected part- probably simple but is there a way of cutting it down on Logic to just the part I need rather than having huge amounts of file size for a few short samples?

yeah use an external sample editor like audacity (Free) this the only way as logic has to convert any file type to aiff/wav before you do anything to it. Its annoying having to convert a 320 into a wav just for the sake of editing it.
