Automating Preset/Patch Changes

Postby alphacat » Wed Nov 11, 2009 2:37 am

^ dunno 'bout dat one, but here's my question for any Reaper power-users:
_______________________

Is there a way to automate patch changes with, say, an envelope or something actually in the track timebase? I've played with ReaControlMIDI but must not be getting it.

Thanks in advance!

@ Slyman and Alphacat

I'd ask your questions on the Reaper forums. there are plenty of Reaper boffins there who are only to happy to help! :)

Sorry I can't help personally... :(

Thanks all for the great tips in here thus far...

I'm pretty shit and all just getting into building tunes, please forgive my ignorance. Reaper is my first DAW.
I've been sampling loads of drums for tunes but I've not been too overjoyed with much of anything, and it seems like this is too time consuming.
Looking around I've been seeing people doing midi drums on the piano roll.
This looks like fun to me, can someone point me in a direction?

Just kidding. The Cockos forums are great and all, don't get me wrong - but it can be hard to get stuff answered there too, sometimes.

Thanks for all the great advice & tips you've given us in this thread to date. :t:

Yup, it's easy.

Too add Albino as an insert effect, click on 'FX' on the channel you'll be using Albino and select Albino. Reset the synth using the Diverse Sounds init pach or whatever it is. On the oscillator, select audio input from the oscillator type drop down menu. External audio is now passing through Albino! :)

You may need to turn up the gain to hear it. Bear in mind that the audio passes through the filters as well as the effects. Furthermore, it is still subject to the ADSR envelopes too, which are tied to the amplitude control (volume).

In the far top right of the FX window in Reaper, there is a little dry/wet control. If you have another synth higher up the FX chain before Albino, I'd recommend turning down the dry/wet for the other synth. 20% dry/wet works nicely for me, making Albino act fully as an insert (as you can't hear the original any more).

Too set it up as a send effect, insert another channel and wack Albino on it as above. Click on the 'IO' button for the new channel and add a new recieve from whichever track you want processed by albino. Viola!

You may or may not want to go the the 'IO' section of the track you're sending from and tick the 'Master/Parent Send' option. This swaps the channel from being heard at the same time as being routed through the send, or only being heard through the channel it with Albino on it.

:)

Sorry for the late reply.

So you managed to process external audio with Albino in the end? Literally, I used the process I described above to process external audio using the ALbino 3 demo of the Linplug website.

Btw, there is no reason why you couldn't process the output of Massive with Albino. It will accept any audio source through its input!

Two things.

Firstly, go to the preferences dialogue and set your soundcard. By default, your computer will have an onboard Direct X based soundcard. The preferences window is listed at the very bottom of the Options menu. The soundcard settings are in the Audio > Device tab.

Click on the very top drop down menu to select which soundcard to use. Use ASIO if you have it, ifnot, WDM or Direcsound will suffice. You can download ASIO4All drivers for free from here ---> http://www.asio4all.com which gives you ASIO on non ASIO equiped computers.

-----------------------------

Regarding using a midi keyboard, be it the internal Reaper keyboard or an external device.

You need to tell the sequencer channel upon which your VSTi is loaded which midi channel to listen for. This can be done by clicking on the sequencer channels VU meter and selecting MIDI > All MIDI Inputs fromt he drop down menu.

You may also need to turn on Record Monitoring by clicking on the small button with the speaker symbol on it which is directly to the left of the VU meter on each sequencer channel.

That should do it!

futures_untold wrote:Please vote for rearrangeable/dockable windows inside Reaper ---> http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=1527

This would mean that we could arrange the interface as we wished. Combined with the already customisable themes, toolbars and menus, Reaper could be truly moulded into the killer audio app of your dreams!

(For more examples of dockable windows, use Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Audition. All the toolbars and work areas can be rearranged as you wish) :)

Thanks!
