SKRILLEX - CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM ONLY PLEASE

Post by Sonika » Mon Nov 07, 2011 4:57 am

READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE YOU POST
I personally like many of the songs that Skrillex has put out, as do I ALSO like more minimal, "pure" dubstep such as Skream, Benga, etc.

Basically, on ALL of these Skrillex songs on youtube, on all of the forums, on EVERYTHING, there's always some dubstep "purist" yelling about how Skrillex "isn't real dubstep," etc.
Okay. First of all, you're right, he isnt that minimal garage style stuff like Skream makes, but please explain how a song like Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites isnt dubstep. 140 bpm? yup. Kick on one, snare on 3? yup. Low register, modulated bassline? Hell yeah. Admittedly, it's a lot more layered and a lot less dark, but that's just evolution. Honestly, it's a lot tougher to create a Skrillex song than a Skream song - I re-made "Filth" by Skream perfectly on Logic in half an hour, I have yet to even get the opening for Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites right. It's fine that you don't like Skrillex, no one's asking you to - but can you please refrain from all of the straight up nasty ad homonym remarks like "ahhhh you're all f a g g o t s shitty fucking ass music not real dubstep this stupid mainstream long haired f a g g o t sucks cock."
THAT DOESNT GET ANYONE ANYWHERE.

Oh, and for the record, Skream and Skrillex are good friends:
quote from a Skream interview: "I love Skrillex. He's my boy."

And don't go after Skrillex's personality either, because he's a really nice guy - REALLY nice. And he's a really hard worker. As far as him TRYING to be mainstream goes, a quote from one of his interviews:
"I would have been happy just making a few 100 bucks a week performing at local clubs. This whole thing just kinda blew up."

And one last thing - so many of you hate on him, but all he has is love for you. He even respects you. Just think about that.

Since this thread got heavily modded and moved from the SNH while I was practicing my alpaca stance...

What do really want to know? You want some constructive criticism while going on a tirade? I don't think you are really asking anything, so what do you want constructive criticism on? Whether or not Skrillex is dubstep? Whether or not dubstep is a kick on the one and the snare on the three. Validation that you can re-make a Skream song quite easily, yet you're flummoxed by a Skrillex tune?

IDK... :?

this really did open my eyes i used to say skrillex isnt dubstep. but it might of been out of jealousy i mean really some of his tracks are sick but i got sick of people talking about skrillex ALL THE TIME. i mean go up to some random person on the street ( more likely in the usa) and ask them to name a dubstep artist they will ether say idk or skrillex.
so ya we all need to stop hating :w:

DM - I don`t even discuss Dubstep anymore because of this.
I just talk about bass music and folks understand.

At the op: I don't really like much of skrillex's music but I have respect for his clear talent. However, he admitted that the opening melody in scary monsters is a straight preset from I think it was either sylenth or absynth. Either way it's not all that challenging of a sound to make. Now perfecting some of his other sounds a completely different story. But if you really want to make an argument about production talent in the "brostep" area, this would be my prime example :

Plenty of sub and "feeling" in it. Yeah it's a dirty ass tune but it's highly complex as well. But then again, nobody's mastered the reese like spor (except for maybe phace and noisia).

You're a fucking speng, nobody cares anything you've said, least of all Skrillex
Skrillex really doesn't give a fuck about haters either. He's earning way too much money and having way too much fun to care about anyone who isn't feeling his music. So why do YOU care? I'll tell you why, because you're a sad little man with nothing better to do.

Having said that I REALLY want to hear your version of Filth by Skream, it is no doubt going to be hilarious

Skrillex is a sick producer. I don't like much of his output but there's no doubt the man has skills. but when you're comparing him to someone like Skream, there is one fundamental difference. In 10 years I will listen to Midnight Request line and it will sound as sick as the first time I heard it. I probably won't even remember what "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" is.

I think just the fact that Emo Girl is effected by DSF shows how uber cool we all are.
Who cares about anything beyond that?

Getting Bro's and Emo Girls affected is the reason Skrillex is famous. Clearly the reason why DSF is too. High fives all around guys! :4:
