WHAT IS DUBSTEP? A guide to start with is here.
** PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST BEFORE POSTING **
Posting lots of youtube links per post is making this thread difficult to load on older computers (and phones), and in some cases causing crashes so please limit yourself to 5 videos per post. Well, after seeing the thread of the link to whatever blog it was where the guy basically spent a few pages ranting about how dubstep = fart noises, my initial reaction was of course one that can be summarised by the word "tnuc". But after (slightly) more thinking, I remembered that he's right. I challenge anyone to try and listen to every release on the first page of chemical records (or any big dubstep outlet) without wanting to a shed a tear for a lost genre. He's right, its all mindless, shit, pointless, mid-range robofart basslines (thank you corpsey...) which as painful as it is, constitutes probably 90% of what gets played out, in this country at least.
But then I had another little change of heart, and realised that yeah - thats true...but anyone with any vague interest in music will get past that and find the bounty of gold underneath, that is some of the greatest electronic music producers of all time. But muppets aren't interested in that. It takes time out of their ever busy schedule of biscuits and masturbating furiously to well photoshopped cats.
Anyway. As such, we aren't going to get anywhere by calling them stnuc. But it would be pretty tits if we could link them to a thread with nothing but audio links to real, musical dubstep. None of this new wave of mind blowingly shit music. I know its not an easy thing to do, as everyone is going to have different ideas on what they would call "music" within dubstep, but as a guide...kick on 1st + snare on 3rd + bassline isn't what were after. As ironic as that is.
I know this is just a vague variation on about a million other threads, but I know id use it all the time to link people to who have a bad preconception of what dubstep is (as long as its kept fairly derail/tripe free!) Its worth a shot anyway, as it saves a moderate amount of legwork from me that if this goes wrong ill probably end up doing for myself...whatever, its ball rolling time.
Bloody hell, making this list made me realise how little of what I listen to is really "dubstep"...oh, and neverland has been ommited because I don't think theres such thing as a youtube rip of that tune worth listening to. I tried to stay away from stuff thats not quite so purist "dubstep".
...sorry to anyones browser I just crashed. But ya know, it aint meant to be no fuck about list. Now everyone else, fill in the (epic) gaps!
Oh yeah, and good call from fractal...changed the name to something a little less provocative lol Open to better suggestions though.

Re: A list for morons
Yeah I actually had a bit of a moral dilemma when it came to the early skream stuff! Its probably the perfect example of true 'dubstep' (but more the other way round!) but its never really been my kind of stuff. I know simplicity is a lot of the point of it, but i never saw his stuff as particularly musical.
Saying that...
Glamma is just no holds barred fucking HUGE.

Re: A list for morons
this is true madness.amazing how skream can continually make amazing tunes.not all of them appeal to me personally and stuff like raw dogz or what did he say are annoying imo but then exothermic reaction and minimalistix are mindblowing.

Re: A list for morons
Big thread!
We’re keeping you up to speed with hardcore music,
And music is what it’s all about,
I love it just like you love it,
That’s why you’re here,
I’m here cause i love to play
You don’t come and I can’t play and I love to play
So, well i won’t make too many speeches cause it’s all about the music
Will give my contribution later.

Re: Dubstep 101
How could you remotely call that James Blake song dubstep? If that is dubstep, then glitch-hop, idm, and trip hop are all dubstep... We know the songs he makes in the past, but using this song is much too atypical...

nice post wiggles
good to see some positive threads for newbies rather than people shouting at them, telling them they're stupid and ramming opinions down their throats

why does dubstep have to be typical? no music should be afraid to do anything a bit differentkultron wrote:How could you remotely call that James Blake song dubstep? Re: Dubstep 101
Pretty much. I don't really know how something could embody dubstep much more to me...plodding, spacious, inventive, half step 140 bpm electronic music...I mean, im sure james blake didnt sit down and say "im going to make a dubstep track!" but the framework he used is based around it. I mean, I would pose the question "what would you call it?" if it wasn't the most self-destructive sentence in music.herbalicious wrote:BPM.kultron wrote:How could you remotely call that James Blake song dubstep? I'd say this thread is trying to quash your very question! Displaying the diversity beat makers have shown working within a dubstep framework, and trying to move away from this idea (that is growing more and more year by year) that dubstep is a half step loop + bass.
In fact, on that note its time for more blake and co...
Theres a 15 second or so section in lock in the lion that comes in after about 40 seconds that, for me, is without a shadow of doubt my favourite 15 seconds of electronic music, and is vying with the first guitar note in pink floyds shine on you crazy diamond for greatest man made sound ever.
