A Rant About Dubstep/Beatport/Skrillex/Deadmau5

Post by LA_Boxers » Wed Nov 10, 2010 10:39 am

Hmm okies i know this has been done xxxxx times, however I was quite upset when I went on Beatport (my first mistake i guess) yesterday. I did my standard going straight to the Dubstep part of the site and going to the top 10. Fucking Skrillex everywhere. Im guessing he has recently had an album out or something. I then see it is released through Deadmau5 record label........ :u: . Literally 75% of the top 100 dubstep tracks were by people i'd hardly/never heard of aka american brosteppas etc. I then go through the latest releases etc and see hardly anything worth coppin'. I did get one of the new Sub Scape Tracks, and Pinch - Qawwali and a DJ Madd track but apart from that there was not alot.

I then went back to the main homepage......where apart from Deadmau5 being number 1, the top 10 of everything was pretty much Skrillex.

Fair play to him, its not his fault that people buy his music due to what record label its on rather than what it sounds like.........but fuck sake it pisses the hell out of me!! Theres some of the most beautiful tracks ever that will not get anywhere near the top 100 of the dubstep charts, let alone the whole thing. I know theres nothing i can do except purchase the tracks is support and try and educate my friends however its so stupid.

I know thats how the industry works and i know this rant has been done 10000000 times but i just needed to vent!! Sorry!!

bleep.com and boomkat tend to have the charts and recommendations of stuff i like
beatport has always been overpriced in comparison to the other digital download sites stocking the same stuff and the flash interface is annoying to say the least
never got why people go there first unless it's an exclusive to beatport label or release

i personally don't get his sound either, but more power too em for making that bank and honestly was a brilliant move on deadmau5's part marketing wise, skrillex gets fans who probably wouldn't have heard of him if he wasn't on deadmau5's label, and deadmau5 gets sales of his records and some new fans of sonny moore's old band project
win win for both of em

Deep. LOL.

The 'beautiful' Dubstep you like is a genuine underground music. Why do people expect it to be top of the charts? I know people like their artists of choice to get their props, shit I'd love to Qawalli or Get Up by Pinch to be a Uk chart smasher. But it's not going to be and getting angry that JLS is or whatever crossover/hype/pop/generic track is, has got to be counter productive. Shit I'm over the moon when I hear tunes like this get played in a big club!
I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

Yeah i know what your saying......its just quite frustrating. Not going to say im against jump-up/hype tracks. I play it out quite a bit and enjoy it in a club, however its more the fact people listen to what theyre told to listen to, rather than deciding for themselves what they like. Kinda like X factor. Im sure im opening up a whole can of worms and we shouldnt go down this route AGAIN.....but I just needed to vent. lol.

Its hardly something to get worked up about.
People have bought the tracks because they like the tracks, not because its on Dead Mau5's label. Quite the contrary, alot of Mau5 fans have been upset because it hardly follows the expected vibe.

The reason its in the top 10 on beatport is because alot of people have liked the tunes and bought them. Its that simple.
This is even more apparent on Beatport being one of the more expensive digital distribs.
It doesnt mean that its bad music or whatever, just means that more people like that than the tunes you like, its a sad yet simple fact.

If people like it there going 2 buy,if people buy it then it goes up in whatever chart! Its really not that difficult to understand i dont get why people are always moaning about it.

If all the stuff you listen to when to No. 1 i bet there would be threads on this forum moaning about how popular and mainstream it had become! You can't win either way

Ive never once even checked beatport for music.. Its always been about Boomkat, Juno, Chemical for me.

Seriously though its just like turning on the top40 on whatever day it plays now and getting angry cause Tom Waits isn't number one... Its just silly! People within this scene know theres a very high chance they won't get massive sales like this Skrillex guy (who is he btw? hah) and they make the music they do because its their creative vision and don't compromise it or I find a lot of electronic music producers don't even know whats going on in the genre they're in - they just have their own little bubble and stick to it.

The best music is always unappreciated by the masses.

Fact.

if everybody werent so intimidated by the harder stuff and just stuck to their guns (plus maybe i dunno release something for a change) stuff will get better but loads of peeps that think "dubstep" is all wobble now a days are just running off doing other stuff cause they dont like how the scene is shifting atm... Mala's album still sold shitloads more on vinyl then any other record this year... but you dont see labels like swamp81 or dmz on beatport so you wont see that in the top 10... tbh i think its stubborn... its 2010 not 1989 anymore... digital is a part of the music scene now and labels should just deal with it imo and make sure their tunes are represented over there...
And yeah.. the new guys arent getting vinyl deals so theyre getting digital deals.. and because thats the only place where they can be bought itll make sales grow alot because there are people who like that music... Skrillex is topping the charts well deserved tbh because those tunes really are sick... but there's enough trash there that whould also be released on vinyl if digital wasnt there....

Its not the wobble guys fault for releasing tunes when their still fresh... or releasing them on mediums the "elite" dont want to use.... Coki could have topped the charts 20 times with just a digital release of spongebob but yeah the labels dont do it so it wont happen... its allmost 2011... they stopped making technics... and if you focus on a crowd that only has 1 medium (an out of date one) then you really need to get back to reality cause nobody has a record player these days ...but everybody has an I-Pod... so if you want people to get educated and listen to good tracks youd better make sure your tunes are available for that medium...

its that easy

This. Apart from maybe the track with Foreign Beggars on.

I just feel anybody could have made those tunes, they sound like 90% of the jump-up stuff out there which you usually cant differentiate from each other. The only reason these tunes are doing better than any of the others is the record label they have been released on!!

Edit: when i say anybody i dont literally mean ANYBODY. I dont see us getting signed to Mau5 Trap any time soon. I just mean of the similar stuff that is released, it could have been made by any of them.

Proof? Because all the 1200s are still in production according to Technic's website. IN fact, they have a new 1200 coming out with most of the same motor, belt, and table components. I don't get why you are trying to slam analog tables to help bigup the digital popstep scene.

you can't buy the skrillex album yet on other sites

this is what we call 'marketing' and why many artists do initial beatport exclusives. You funnel all your sales to one site to make it chart.

To nicon-
I heard that that technics thing was just a rumor, and even if it wasn't it wouldn't make a difference, Technics last a very very long time anyway. A lot of people are still using vinyl (including me), quite a few still cut dubs, Mala cuts acetate, what these brosteppers don't understand is that idea behind dubstep, I doubt Mala is cutting acetate just to look cool...
Oh and how can you say that no one has a record player these days, such a bold statement that doesn't make any sense. Have you ever used vinyl?

Because it is an industry fact that record player sales have gone down drastically in the past decade. Vinyl along with that.

I have thousands upon thousands upon thousands of records.... a vinyl addict.... but over the past few years, even I have come to terms with the fate of vinyl. I interact with tons of djs on a daily bassis. In 2000 every single DJ had a pair of technics. In 2010 maybe 1 in 4 has a pair of technics. That is a massive cut in the industry.

What medium you use has nothing to do with the quality of music you produce or play out, how much you understand dubstep, or any of that shit. Cutting dubs doesn't make you a real dubstep artist or mean you understand dubstep anymore than the next man.
