How To Dance To Dubstep

Post by hankerins » Mon May 02, 2011 11:13 pm

I'm about to graduate from college and this is my 'thesis.' In case you couldnt tell, the dancers' movements modulate the sound in Part 1 and the video in Parts 2-4 via infrared cameras/lights and a Max/MSP/Jitter patch. Enjoy.

The official name of my department is Multimedia and Electronic Music Experiments, but I get a plain old 'Music' degree so as not to confuse potential employers (as if they exist). Its a pretty cool little program - never thought bass music would get me through college :dunce:

Fuck me, that's the kind of degree I'd love to do. Well done on the whole thing, seriously it's incredibly interesting.

Wow, i've seen stuff like people controlling lfo speed with the kinect. But this is taking it to the next level, music intertwined with motion, amazing!

Could you eventually install stuff like this in clubs where the movements of the crowd modulates the lights & visuals?

totally! I would love to set up a system like this in an actual nightclub. The best strategy would probably be projecting straight down from above and filling the room with fog to make the lights visible. A couple of pressure sensors or even contact mics in the floor could control sound and visuals too.

You could also make an album in Max that sounded different depending on where it was played. Alas, there are too many possibilities and not nearly enough time.
