How do you follow music?

Post by Be-1ne » Fri Sep 20, 2013 6:12 am

This place used to be the go to for finding out about new tunes and producers. The music forum is full of spam and some wicked releases get little to no feedback / comments?

The amount of vinyl coming out is decreasing IMO. So where do you find out about new tunes these days?

example: I tuned into Bunzero last night and heard some wicked tunes by a new producer i'd not heard before. I go into Music to do some modding and low and behold the guy has a tune coming out on vinyl and the thread has hardly any views and no comments?

Thoughts? opinions? Safe!

Saturation O' Shit

The good shit is in there, but it's the shit shit by producers who know they're shit that crops up, as the shit producers who know their shit is shit make shitty spam posts all over the place, and the shit shit drowns the good shit, which conversely doesn't need a lot of online hype about it because it's the shit.

i don't know man

seriously i've began listening to "listening music" a lot more lately as opposed to "DJ music", a thing that had been quite the exact opposite for the last three years or so.. could have something to do with me quitting my local DJ outfit so i don't have to be up to par with the latest bangers anymore. i mean i do listen to some party stuff but my playlist has become more of the eclectic type

as for the question where i get my tune suggestions. well, tbh spotify's discovery page has been offering some good ass shit lately :6:

I'm just checking the music threads in SNH most, there used to be a lot of different music to be found here but lately it's the same old threads getting bumped while nothing/no-one new get's discussed. As you say there isn't really a I discovered this tune or this artist thread or anything. People also tend to share less.
Haven't been searching much either tbf, I used to search/go through most now I just check the regular topics and dive deep into other types of music(/genres) or check old sets I haven't listened to yet. (I still check new threads but there aren't many good ones)
I also rarely listen to dubstep sets/mixes/radio these days because most people (apart from mr Bunzero/Distance in the past/Joe Nice) tend to recycle and not add new producers while others aren't really my style (youngsta has become so dull). Also if I want to ID a tune most of it doesn't get ID'd because of being exclusive/building up hype/etc so I just forget about it existing.

Feel free to link us the producer you've discovered
"If your chest ain't rattlin it ain't happenin'" - DJ Pinch
"Move pples bodies and stimulate their minds"
we just ride the wave
Life sucks; Get used² it.

@ mIrReN : this is the tune I referenced. I didn't mention it in the original post as I didn't want the post to seem like I was advertising.

Piezo - Ptay + Killawatt Rmx [Nomad 037] 12"

with regard to SNH - do you think the board has become extremely fractured? I never post about releases or tunes in SNH perhaps I should? if your a SNH user could you link people to this post? more opinions the better :-)

@ topmo3 : Yes I agree, but it seem's some what fractured. I think once you go from being a regular user / poster to a casual browser also it is more difficult to find info or join discussion. I've often felt on many occasions that I post in a thread and then it dies LOL :-s I also agree about listening music. I think it's just a phase / cycle we go through. or perhaps a lot of the music is just boring?

@ Wub : I agree, but also find a lot of good shit gets massively overlooked for some reason? could it be that almost all threads unless mentioning someone from the playlist of the top DJ's is overlooked? The classic for me is / are the Niteshade Inc releases. Absolutely no mention of them on here and they are perhaps some of the most interesting 140 records to come out in the past couple of years. or did the spammers just give everyone a bad name , no one posts, everything goes to shit LOL

As a rule of thumb, if a tune is that good and worth a look, it doesn't need to be spammed everywhere. Not wanting to point fingers, but the bedwetter crew with their identikit dungeon/bro/drumstep gumpft are far more likely to be the ones spamming than anything actually decent.

The problem comes when good stuff is mentioned, but only in passing or very briefly or LORD HAVE MERCY! the producer saw it fit to only make one post about it. Deluge of other threads (see aforementioned bedwetter comment) push the thread down the ladder til it drops off and gets missed.

As said, listening to podcasts/mixes/radio whenever and whereever possible does help, but that route you're at the mercy of the tastes of the person you're listening to, and indeed even if their tastes are spot on that's not to say they haven't missed something in the same way you have.

I stopped trying , I found the internet has overwhelmed me with music to the point where nothing felt special or new anymore , you hear tracks so much on youtube or set rips that by the time they come out you either don't buy it , or if you do it just gets sidelined to to hearing it 30,000 times. So over the last year I stopped listening to sets/mixes and music online , started going back to clubs and record shops or at least taking time to go though what stores stock online, music now feels fresh again.

I can totally relate to that. most of the stuff you hear in sets or on rinse/kiss/etc. gets played to the point it just becomes another tune that I couldn't care less about. Yunx's sets became bland to the point I'll just skip through his podcasts in search of a spot I might enjoy. the same applies to pretty much every other broadcaster. I still enjoy listening to the likes of Joe Nice, Bunz and Phrex though, as they manage to deliver a fresh selection now and then.

that Piezo release isn't really noteworthy in my oppinion. it's yet another techno informed stepper, which we've seen come to rise over the last year. both tunes could've been released on Osiris just as well, and this isn't exactly an indicator of quality anymore. I feel like "technodubstep" took the place of dungeon, and that "130" sound, which I guess should propose the antithesis, is just really pointless to me (can't be arsed to develop this train of thought, and I hope everybody will know what I'm trying to say).

Guyus' mate new.com had this imho brilliant idea a couple of years back to ask proved local DJs which 10 releases got their attention over the last month, thus releasing a list of charts. since he chose carefully who he'll endorse on his page, you're always guaranteed to find a gem or two in those selections. also, I try to spend more time in record stores again.

@ Jurkhands : Totally agree 100% The thing with the Piezo tune is that It's a new artist I've not heard before with a half decent release. I think the sour point of the 12" is that the b-side is a remix. Which I always find a turn off as if im buying 2 tunes i want them to be different not a remix. get me.

But regardless of that.... It was a thread with a fairly decent tune in that has just been bypassed on the forum. Could it be one of the things that is stifling progression is 1, nuff spam from donuts and 2, people in a position to expose new talent not doing so...? (Have to tip my hat to distance as I did find out about loads of sick producers when he had his rinse shoe, sadly missed imo).

also good to hear people going back to stores....

yeah, there are rarely any remixes that I'd chose over another original tune. I really like the approach Houndstooth were taking with the latest Snow Ghosts release, though. Calibre is arguably the best remixer of the last five years, Kahn did a cover version (which is something really fresh in the world of "bass music"), and Roly Vex'd just ripped the tune apart and created something completely different. I also like how every single version explores a new range of tempo.
and again, I think the Killawatt remix is one of his weakest works as of late, and I won't pay 6quid for a single tune that's decent, but not outstanding. I appreciate how difficult it may be for new artists to get noticed and to get a release. but producing okay tunes just won't cut it anymore. either do something completely new (or at least new to the generation that's listening your music), as MssingNo & Plata to name two of the most discussed unsigned artists dsf cares about, or be really fucking good at what you're doing, like Gantz or Commodo and Kahn a few years back.

my wallet isn't a welfare programme for "okay producers" or promising talent. I buy vinyl and I enjoy doing so. but I have to chose carefully what I buy.
also, 99.99% of today's new guys unleash their music on soundcloud and so forth as soon as it sounds somewhat decent, which I consider to be a huge mistake. (remember the days when you'd go see Fabio play and put a cd-rw with your stuff on his table?)
people need to appreciate the concepts of patience and endurance again. my mate had over 100 projects, finished and unfinished, on his hd that nobody has ever heard besides him, before sending his latest productions to a few friends asking for their oppinions. self-criticism goes a long way, and I imagine him further honing his skills until he thinks he's really ready to throw something out there.
reminds me of Objekt, now that I think of it.

Nodata isn't a pirate website, and what.cd is impossible to access unless you have an invite or you did an interview

most of the links on nodata are dead anyway

last i read was that filesharing and direct links to signed tunes is banned, not linking pirate sites in general, not directly linked anyway. but forgive me if that's wrong.

Yes, this is a good topic. Have to echo what nakedlunch said really, oversaturation just kills your enthusiasm eventually. it's very easy to box yourself in via who you follow on soundcloud/what mixes or shows you listen to on the regular etc. Maybe getting away from a mainly online experience of the scene is the way to go. I'd love to regain the passion I used to have.

Btw; Piezo - Pink Foot. Big tune!

Really, the internet is a shite way to experience music in general...DSF is a bit better than most places I suppose though.

I've discovered a large part of the music I like through youtube and it's honestly a terrible way to go about it...I always put in on in the background to whatever reading/writing I'm doing, so I can't properly focus on the tune. Besides youtube comments are filled with mugs trying to look smart for likes. Blogs/online magazines aren't much better either, too much clever journalist shit. I have a local record shop I like to go to, that's a far better way to listen to music. It's a real environment where you have to make a little effort to put on the tune, which you'll then likely stand and focus on, and which will probably be in optimal sound quality. The other people there likely care about the music and aren't internet idiots obsessed with the politics of it.

Naturally though, the best way to hear it is in a rave with a good sound system and a hyped crowd.

Joe Nice's shows are usually a great place to hear fresh music and producers. Heard Gantz for the first time on his show.

Soundcloud, radio shows/podcasts, and an app called Discovr that's actually turned me on to some great stuff.

oh shit how could i forget yeah soundcloud totally

kind of wish rinse.fm had an official SC, instead of all the individual artists posting them. if the artist wanted it on their SC they would just repost it from the rinse SC. just like fabric does 8)
