FUSION 2: ancient futurist illbient wonk-dub

(this is not dubstep. but there is no "mixes" section in "other music" so... mods feel free to relocate)

Traditional and contemporary music from 5 continents, 25 countries, mashed up and dubbed out. The Fusion series is more for listening rather than the dancefloor, but there are certainly some bangers for brocking out, alongside more tripped out and lyrical numbers. Tracks are generally longer than in Fusion 1, and together makes perhaps a more cohesive composition, following a definite and particular trajectory.

Nice one, I'll check it :t:

Edit: Ya 3aeni, Ahmad Adawaya!!! I used to live in Cairo, this man was a Don!

Look at that ashtray, huwa masri ta3hleedi

Two other great shaabi singers...Hasan Al Asmar

And Magdi Talaat

I had hundreds of tapes. Modern shaabi is too slick, part of the appeal for me was the echo and feedback of these live one take recordings.

Edit 2: I was impressed with the ambition and the idea behind Fusion 1 but I prefer this one, big up!

supposedly a lot of stories/myths surrounding this man as well... top of the game, alleged mob associations, all kinds of craziness... also hundreds of albums but legal problems kept them from official or international release, and thus his fame consigned to the status of local legend... or something like that (best i can remember from what a friend was telling me). and didn't he used to be a barber before starting to make music?

if you have any more recommendations (or tape rips???) i'd be grateful.

how long did you live in Cairo? for uni or your family was living there? so cool... i want to go sooner rather than later! but i hear the government is real backwards and makes everything difficult...

thanks brother. somehow i think the popularity of this one is going to pale compared to the last... it's more abstract and less conventional maybe. next volume is going to be ancient futurist techno :) some Afro-Asiatic 4 to da muthafuggin floor

I was there about seven years, left in '92 though so no idea where my tapes are now. A mate of mine put a compilation together in 1990, dowloadable from this blog: http://whatsinmyipod.blogspot.com/2008/ ... egypt.html

I remember around '89 Adaweya went into hospital, word in the souk was that a jealous husband had tried to chop off his manhood  Egyptians love a good rumour, probably cos they live in a police state and the press is a joke.
