Phigure wrote:Linux is not a filesystem, neither is "Mac OS". Android devices use an ext4 filesystem I believe and iOS devices use FAT32, but that's irrelevant to the discussion anyways because filesystems don't really have any effect on the end user experience anyway. Also the Darwin kernel is under an open license, iOS however is not.

also these mobile OSs are so different from their desktop relatives that it really doesn't make any sense at all to claim that one is better because it's desktop counterpart is superior (in your opinion)

ANYWAYS, back to the OP. It really depends what you're looking to get out of the device to be honest. The hardware (screen, specs, camera, etc) is pretty much all better on the iPhone, but it's a closed platform (unless you jailbreak). I don't really mind jailbreaking because it's not much of a hassle, but if you want to have that level of control over your device and don't want to bother with circumventing Apple's restrictions, then maybe Android is better for you.

Also I've always liked iOS's UI more than Android's. It's more consistent across applications and easier to use (and looks better IMO). Aaaaaand I think iOS has got a better range of apps to choose from with more big name developers (although it's not a big disparity between iOS and Android)

  Top End Android Phone's like the HTC One X or S and the Galaxy 3 BLOW the Iphone out of the water…. Android is a way better OS as well

I attach my N8 to the bars and I get full Nokia maps navigation.
I feel cool on my lowrider but with my gps I feel even cooler.

I even choose a voice like a butler and have him call me sir on every voice instruction, like a boss.

Being serious about the subject at hand again for a second-

If you plan on making music with your phone, then iphone. Period. Otherwise... there are pros and cons to each platform and you'll have to figure out what's most important to you.

I've long hated Apple's whole approach to everything (I like to get under the hood and tweak shit) and based on that chose a Blackberry over an iPhone when my job was giving us free phones. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER. Blackberry had negative music-making capabilities (at least, my model did.) I've played with some of the musicmaking apps for Android, but honestly the iPhone gets it really really right. I've been forced to eat a big chunk of humble pie and say: iPhones are amazingly well designed for the most part and any shortcomings I've encountered were more than offset by Nanostudio, Animoog, Sunrizer XS, Alchemy Mobile, and all the other amazing sound tools available for IOS.

More details about Android vs. iPhone audio specs for those who care:
alphacat wrote:re: Why there aren't more musicmaking apps for Android -

Based on what I've been reading, it comes down to a single factor: latency. The iPhone from version 3 onwards has < 60 ms latency, which is not bad, even in the world of dedicated audio hardware. Android, by comparison, has something around 300 ms of latency just out of the box, and that tanks further when the device has memory or processor bottlenecks. This makes it unacceptable for most anybody thinking about using it as a live musical interface and compromises the experience of anybody using it just for shits and giggles, with stuff like synthesis being noticeably laggy.

The Google people know about this and while it's serious enough to get mentioned it still hasn't been fixed years on now.

More on this...

http://www.rossbencina.com/code/dave-sp ... le-io-2011

http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2011/ ... oid-phone/

That said, I've played with the Caustic app for Android (http://causticapp.blogspot.com/) and it's alright. Reminds me a bit of Propellerheads stuff. NodeBeat is also available for Android.

There's definitely more/better on iPhone (and I'm not a fan of Apple in general, but will acknowledge the reality of the situation.) Ironically a lot of what's available for iPhone is either buggy or useless though... much like Windows freeware & cheapware.

When you start counting only the apps that support either AudioCopy/Paste or general Pasteboard - so you can get the sounds from the app making the sounds into a recording or sampling app - the selection thins drastically. There's a lot of stupid little noisemaker apps that might entertain you for a couple minutes and then make you say "why the hell did I just pay $1.99 for that?!"

An iPhone with Nanostudio, Alchemy and Sunrizer XS, NLog, and/or Addictive = a solid mobile music production platform with all the basics - beats, sampling, synthesis.
And if you're gonna come back and chat shit just to be contrarian, please be sure you've actually read the three links in the quote above first.
