University at Buffalo physicist Dejan Stojkovic and colleagues proposed in 2010 that the early universe—which exploded from a single point and was very, very small at first—was one-dimensional before expanding to include two dimensions (like a plane) and then three (like the world in which we live today).
The theory, if valid, would address important problems in particle physics.
“What we’re proposing here is a shift in paradigm,” Stojkovic says. “Physicists have struggled with the same problems for 10, 20, 30 years, and straight-forward extensions of extensions of the existing ideas are unlikely to solve them.
“We have to take into account the possibility that something is systematically wrong with our ideas,” he says. “We need something radical and new, and this is something radical and new.”
In a paper published in Physical Review Letters, Stojkovic and Loyola Marymount University physicist Jonas Mureika describe a test that could prove or disprove the “vanishing dimensions” hypothesis.
Because it takes time for light and other waves to travel to Earth, telescopes peering out into space can, essentially, look back into time as they probe the universe’s outer reaches.
Gravitational waves can’t exist in one- or two-dimensional space. So Stojkovic and Mureika have reasoned that the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a planned international gravitational observatory, should not detect any gravitational waves emanating from the lower-dimensional epochs of the early universe.
Stojkovic says the theory of evolving dimensions represents a radical shift from the way we think about the cosmos—about how our universe came to be.
The core idea is that the dimensionality of space depends on the size of the space we’re observing, with smaller spaces associated with fewer dimensions. That means that a fourth dimension will open up—if it hasn’t already—as the universe continues to expand.
The theory also suggests that space has fewer dimensions at very high energies of the kind associated with the early, post-big bang universe.

Hopefully a funding body will get behind this.

does this mean everybody's given up on LIGO ever working?knell wrote:source article

Always figured there were fewer dimensions at lower temps, not the other way around. Trip?

i'm not sure what you mean? they're similar except LISA will be orbital and therefore more accurate for studies like this.. they're both not "working" at the momentpompende wrote:does this mean everybody's given up on LIGO ever working?knell wrote:source article

haha, just intuition.
Re: Dejan Stojkovic Proposes Expanding 4th Dimension Theory
The thing is, what difference would it make.
We exist in and can only perceive and work in 3 dimensions, period. No matter what the math says *may* exist, ourselves & our expensive billion dollar science instruments are both confined to this 3D reality (4D if you count time as a Dimension too), period.
It’s like a 2 dimensional stick-person, on a piece of paper. Even if you straight up told him there was another dimension and removed all doubt, its not like he could ever do anything with that knowledge, like stand up & move through it, or build something to manipulate it, nothing. Anything he constructs on that 2D piece of paper he lives on, is also going to be 2D. All he will have is the knowledge that another dimensions exists--from a higher being he can’t even see (you).
Not to rain on anybody’s parade.
There are very probably many many MANY dimensions in existence we can’t perceive. Yes, interesting stuff, and fun to think about, but on a practical level, there’s no point in thinking you’re going to, as a 3D lifeform, somehow send yourself or through the 4/5/6/7/8th etc dimension, or pull anything from them, into yours. Not going to happen.
It either already exists there (like the 2D stickman on a piece of paper also exists in our 3D), or its by the laws of nature out of our reach. Here’s why:
-
Now, I know most of you may not believe in the bible, but it flatly explains, that there is at least one other Realm (Spirit Realm) besides this one, referred to as “Heaven” for our sake, so we can understand it. And it explains, first with a comparison between things on earth:
39 Not all flesh is the same flesh, but there is one of mankind, and there is another flesh of cattle, and another flesh of birds, and another of fish. 40 And there are heavenly bodies, and earthly bodies; but the glory of the heavenly bodies is one sort, and that of the earthly bodies is a different sort. 41 The glory of the sun is one sort, and the glory of the moon is another, and the glory of the stars is another; in fact, star differs from star in glory. - 1 Corinthians 15
50 However, this I say, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit God’s kingdom, neither does corruption inherit incorruption. - 1 Corinthians 15
So yes there are more. But Human science will not break through the walls of our Container (this Universe) because the same being that created it has said its physically impossible, and made it like that.

when my grandad was in school, they told him without a doubt that the atom could not be split, that it was the only solid block of existence. You're only limiting yourself by thinking like this.ketamine wrote: Human science will not break through the walls of our Container (this Universe) because the same being that created it has said its physically impossible, and made it like that.

oh...
Re: Dejan Stojkovic Proposes Expanding 4th Dimension Theory
He makes the mistake of assuming the LISA will be able to detect ANY gravity waves though. It could be some time before his theory's proven.
Re: Dejan Stojkovic Proposes Expanding 4th Dimension Theory
I agree and get what you’re saying in general. I find this stuff mind-blowingly interesting myself. And, although I sounded like it, I really wasn’t trying to be negative on the research itself, I was just questioning any practical future application of it.knell wrote:when my grandad was in school, they told him without a doubt that the atom could not be split, that it was the only solid block of existence. In other words: spend billions on something useful, like Earthquake detection, or new Fuel/Power source. Instead of LHC’s looking for darkmater, brane universes and other dimensions we probably can’t get into even if they’re there. That’s all I meant. What do you think about that?
