KiNK puts everyone else to shame

Post by wub » Tue Jul 16, 2013 8:47 am

KiNK... any chance of a list of the equipment you used?
sure :) the mixing desk is Mackie 16.8.2, on the left side / top is MFB Urzwerg pro, analog sequencer, which gives CV / Gate to MFB Microzwerg (the little dark blue synth next to it) for the bass and CV / Gate to the black synth under the seq., which is MFB Kraftzwerg. The Kraftzwerg makes some bleeps. Urzwerg also gives midi to the blue synth down there (MFB Synth II), for some sort of a pad. The red little box is MFB 522 (the drums). The black box with red knobs is FMR RNLA (compressor)

on the other table I have a technics turntable, a very fucked up dj mixer (i dont know the brand) and Electroharmonix Memory Man with Hazarai (its the delay, i use it as a send effect, few times on the vocal

Just mindblowing.

Sample choice is a little on the cheesy side I'll admit, but in terms of the way he's essentially creating and working the track live, it's damn impressive.

Obviously if you're not a fan of the style of music, then fair enough.

It's his style/sound though, and it's obviously working for him. Even on a reduced setup where he's looping vinyl live he's got the vibe going;

Although again, it's not a sample I'd probably head for myself.

Hmm, I'm struggling to get into this, it's my style for starters, but isn't he just playing a pre programmed pattern (a bit of a boring one as well) on the synth which is midi clocked to whatever he's using for the drums? IE, he's kinda basically just pressing play on a few things.

Microdeform 'warmed up' (he was the highlight of the show imo) for my band not long ago, he makes these massive ambient soundscapes, with a mass of synths, turntables, samplers and alike. Very odd and experimental but absolutely hypnotic. Couldn't find a video of that live performance, but here is one that doesn't capture any of his energy, meh:

I just love the rough and ready, hands on, live approach rather than drawing automation curves and trimming samples to the ms and and and ......

With Bulgarian producer Strahil Velchev's new album as KiNK, Under Destruction, set to drop in May via Macro, the seasoned artist has shared a new video which shows off the various pieces of hardware he used during the live jam sessions which yielded the forthcoming LP. The 10-minute video cuts together clips of Under Destructions's tracks as they are recorded live with Velchev tweaking filters, triggering FX, rearranging sequences, and even playing a bit of live piano towards the end. Existing somewhere between an album preview and a "making of" video, this new piece featuring KiNK and his tabletop of hardware can be watched in action below.

Lovely. Yeah, not too sure about the samples, but it's the workflow that's great. Much better than playing sideways clip tetris with a mouse in your DAW. This block goes there, bar 33 must have a drop, draw in linear envelopes.... urgh, trying so hard to break away from that. It's that next level of production I think.

I don't like that either. Nowadays I just play 8 bar loops and the Redrum sequencers and then tweak parameters on the go. Less control over the outcome, more control over the music and in a more creative way.

Bulgarian producer KiNK (a.k.a. Strahil Velchev) has been selected as the performer in the latest edition of Resident Advisor’s RA Sessions video series. Calling on the same energy that’s made him a renowned live act, here KiNK offers a techno-tinged set that mixes improvised stretches with “Source of Uncertainty,” a new track from Under Destruction, his forthcoming debut LP set to drop on May 5 via Macro.

More live vinyl looping and drum machine/synth jamming :h:
