Preventing bass to go throw walls and piss the neighbours

Post by daft cunt » Wed Nov 17, 2010 9:25 pm

I noticed that depending on where I stand in the room, the bass can be much louder than when I'm in front of the speakers, which even at a decent volume is pretty loud (and I don't even have a sub woofer).
I assume, the loudest I hear is what go throw walls and gets to the neighbour's (is that correct ?) and even though they never complained about it, it makes me feel bad.
So are there any room treatment tricks that doesn't involve to build a room inside the room that could help keeping the bass at the same volume everywhere ?

Eggshell foam is particularly cheap. Especially if you only have to do one wall.
Just based on theory you could put a bunch of any foam or anything else that absorbs sound, over the length of the wall, and then if you still had problems you could nail wood over it just to give you an extra layer.

Are you second story when you're in your lab?

Yeah that's for the lab but actually that's for the flat I'll move in in a couple of months because I'm renting atm.
Not sure about the eggshell thingy, I heard it's not that good for soundproofing, do you have experience with it yourself ?

A band I was in used did it to the floor and wall because we practiced on a second story with two rooms on either side, but we did 1foam1wood1foam1wood not just the one. compacts the room a little bit but honestly it doesn't even look bad, is cheap, and easily removed/changed if you don't mind pulling nails out of the wall.

worked well enough I suppose, used to practice realllly loud and never got shit for it

Sorry what you mean by "second story" ?

Anyway, the flat is pretty nice and tbh I'm not sure about the eggs boxes on the walls

Also I forgot to mention that the walls aren't even a problem because the studio is going to be between my bedroom and the living-room so I'm more worried about the appartements below and above.

The ceiling wouldn't be too hard, its the floor you'll have to struggle with, unless you wanna take apart the floor and put stuff in between the struts and then build a lead platform for everything in the room to sit on haha.

It really all could be avoided if you just say to your neighbours "look, I make music, its quite bassy but I will keep it quiet past 8pm" I'm sure they'll be understanding. Just wack on the headphones past 8 - then mix stuff down in the day.

I guess I'm lucky on this one, the downstair neighbour of my future appartment is an old lady. Hopefully she's deaf enough to not be bothered by my music :D

Not sure... my present upstairs neighbours listen to hip-hop and even when it's not very loud (which is too rare for my taste) I can still hear the kick drum and it's pissing me off way before 8pm.
I don't want to be a pain in the ass myself.

Hello mate

Unfortunately there are no simple solutions- sound insulation requires mass and density, and ideally separation. So without creating a independently lined wall, you haven't really got any options. Youd also need to consider flanking around the floor and ceiling, so you end up with the classic room within a room.

There arent any products you can simply add which will do anything. :(

Sorry mate.

Cheers

:)

Thanks for the bad news :D

Considering neighbours are only up&downstairs would it have any effect to insulate only the floor & ceiling ?

There was a thread about this before and Mr Macc had some sage advice to the effect that paradigm x describes....

Tbh, perhaps the solution is to work on your mixes loud in a dedicated purpose built studio somewhere else than your appartment?

You can easily make music at low volume, working on bass in your earphones until it's time to finish the track. With a rough mix, it wouldn't be hard to hire a studio and get the balance right. This would be a good method for an album too, as then you'll be mixing everything at the same time in the same location.

These studio kits from Auralex are not too expensive and work really well. If you do go this route, don't use the glue that comes in the kit cuz you'll never get the foam back off the wall should you ever decide to move.

that's acoustic treatment not sound isolation.
all that foam will change the sound of your room for better or worse but it's not going to stop long bass waves going through the ceiling.
