How to Make a noise by Simon Cann (free dl version)

Post by Electric_Head » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:27 am

How to Make a Noise: A Comprehensive Guide to Synthesizer Programming

How To Make A Noise is perhaps the most widely ready book about synthesizer sound programming. It is a comprehensive, practical guide to sound design and synthesizer programming techniques using:

subtractive (analog) synthesis
frequency modulation synthesis (including phase modulation and ring modulation)
additive synthesis
wave-sequencing
sample-based synthesis

This book looks at programming using examples from six software synthesizers: Cameleon 5000 from Camel Audio, Rhino 2 from BigTick, Surge from Vember Audio, Vanguard from reFX, Wusikstation from Wusik dot com, and Z3TA+
-

I can`t stress how much this should be read by everyone on this site.
New or old.
Especially the one post wonders.

Bumping this thread to keep it up top.
Everyone needs to read this book.

If you feel like posting a thread asking how to make a sound, read this book.
If you want to know which synthesis methods suite your style, read this book.

Some folks will say, "Why is massive not explained"
All I`m going to say is, the vsts he uses to demonstrate the sounds you all want to make, will give you more than a basic understanding of modular routings, lfo assignments, macro controls, etc.

You can put all of these techniques into practice on all synths.

This looks amazing, but I really wish it used at least one synth that i have. (not that they arent all similar).
