Think my studio machine may be on the way out. It's booted up and reset itself once loading Windows 3 times on the trot now. On the plus side, I had a random thought to back up all my samples last week.

AMD Sempron 2800+
2.00Ghz, 2Gb RAM
1 x 150Gb System drive
1 x 80Gb data drive

So it's no great loss if it does decide to die on me. Everything is backed up, and tbh I've had this a fair few years now, probably close to 8yrs if I think about it which isn't bad going at all.

I'm thinking an upgrade is well due - I have beeing using FL8 without updating for fear of the thing dying on me for a while, and I could do with a new audio interface card (currently using a DMX 6Fire) to allow me to fully integrate my fledging hardware setup (synth, couple of outboard effects/processing units).

I'm thinking maybe a MOTU Ultralite, but seeing as I'm trying to incorporate external bits into a FL setup, there is very little information on this online so am kind of in the dark here.

Also means I've finally got an excuse to buy the Ikea Rast table that I had Macc and Deadly recommend to me waaaay back as a racking solution.

Anyway, this thread is more of a sounding board for me and I'm babbling a bit at the moment. Am going to keep my current setup chugging along as best I can whilst I put together the new project, probably take some pics of it as I'm building it to provide updates etc.

Yeah MOTU are very good with their hardware interfaces. Highly recommended. An alternative is the Roland FA-101 (http://www.rolandus.com/products/produc ... ductId=702) same amount of ins/outs, but a bit cheaper.

Have just remembered that whilst backing up my samples drive, I should probably also take time out to back up my FL Studio folder itself, with all VSTs, assorted .dll files and of course my precious FLPs

Is your studio machine connected to the internet? I would make sure it's not malware or something first. The rebooting issue could be some software or driver malfunction too. Unless you're using this as an excuse to upgrade then nm.

Hasn't been connected for at least 2yrs now, so unless something has slipped past my flash drive scans, I'm not sure. Will give it a quick going over to see if it's anything, but tbh I'd like to upgrade my sound interface anyways to integrate my hardware, so it might be an idea to do a new build anyways just to keep it proper virgin clean when I do get it going.

UPDATE: Just gone through MSConfig and taken off from the StartUp menu anything that is either an automatic update (as I'm not connected to the Internet) and a few random things that I didn't recognise from a Google, so will see if that makes a difference.

Mine seems to be on the way out now, my own fault for not keeping it clean and streamlined.
I think a format will fix my problems, then the long grind of getting everything back up and running.

Nah wallpaper is important! I keep them fresh, I get inspiration from them personally.

My studio machine has never touched the internet either, and it's been smooth since I built it (touch wood )
I admit to installing Fallout 3, Dead Space, and STALKER on it though, couldn't help myself. My internet computer was too weak haha. I just lie and tell myself it's for sound design inspiration.

Kinda want to upgrade it too, the motherboard can handle some 6core processors (currently an ageing dual core), but it still has XP 32 so no point in adding more RAM at the moment. I haven't noticed any bottlenecks when making music though, except for a couple of CPU hungry plugins.

I just got my friends computer to work awesome after doing a disk check/repair and defragment. Was freezing up like crazy. Probably past that point, and I'm sure you know all about that, but just thought I'd give my 2 cents. Interested to see what you end up doing... I wish I could have a studio machine, I have to rely on a laptop. By the way, fun fact for anyone who doesn't know... MOTU stands for Mark Of The Unicorn. Learned that at school the other day.

My computer is on the way out too. I think the HDD is on its way out due to the disks becoming loose over the years. I now have to reboot 3 or 4 times till Windows will actually load.

I have nothing backed up. I would be happy to loose everything and just start again so I dont mind.

I just keep telling myself, not tonight please, its been a long day, just work!

Clean it out! This can make a massive difference if all fans etc are clogged with dust.

Boot from a windows cd, press r to repair, then type chkdsk /r

Test memory (memtest.org)

Malwarebytes antimalware

Defrag.

OSX / Win7 dual boots are the way forward, go with an i7 or i5 cpu and keep the hardware specs as close to a Mac and you get the best of both worlds with no real problems.

Nah you can run whatever hardware and just run any OS in VMware now, then close the window, no dual booting necessary any more really. Virtual systems have come a long way the last couple of years.

Good advice. I have already done these and it has not many any difference for me sadly. I think I will just buy a new HDD and reinstall windows on to that.
